Ruger Blackhawk Help

I need holster suggestions for my 357 Blackhawk with a 6.5 inch barrel. I plan on carrying it in the field and while hunting.

Many thanks

I bought a simple Hunter brand leather from Midway USA for a ballpark $38 more or less for open carry hunting and range visits. Then I also have the GunMate brand nylon chest holster with adjustable strap used for deer hunting if wearing a snowsuit.

I would get something nice and made of thick quality leather with a retaining strap for something like that.

Maybe you should check with the folks on the Ruger forum?

Two words... Simply Rugged. They are the best value on the market. You get a top quality, thick good grained leather, and top notch construction. I have three and they jus work well.

Second the Simply Rugged. I have the 120 for my Single Actions, and a pancake for my little Bulldog. They even have a flap holster for added protection while in the field.

I'd recommend CJ Vandermuhlen over all others.

As a full time gunsmith and a firearms instructor, I see MANY holsters and have watched them used and used a lot of them myself. Vandermuhlen is the best value I know of and the quality is excellent.

A simple holster for your Blackhawk will probably run in the $55 range. A super fancy tooled one is about $110-$125.

CJ Vandermuhlen makes each one on an order basis, so there are no limitations on getting what you'd like. He offers some basic types, but you tell him what you want exactly and he makes the holster to your specs.

Contact me if you'd like his number.

If you are cheap like me, you might want to look at a simple Uncle Mikes holster. I've carried revolvers in the field for years with nothing but Uncle Mikes. A 6.5" blackhawk will be a tad long on the hip ( I know, I carried one for several years before switching to a snub nosed Security Six). You might want to consider a shoulder holster.

I carry mine western style in a Triple K holster attached to one of their drop belts with the cartridge loops. It makes a nice rig where I can just throw the entire belt/holster on or off whenever I need to. I actually hike with it in that manner. The leather is decent (not too fancy) and seems to hold up pretty well so far. For the price, I think it was a good buy.

When I bought mine I went to cabelas and picked out the best fit nylon holster they had. I ended up with a Pitbull brand for $15. It fits like a glove. Leather holsters are great but Ive found the best bang for the buck is in the newer nylon holsters that are lined with soft felt type material. I also have 2 nylon uncle mikes shoulder holsters for hiking/fishing. they keep the weight off your hip and act like suspenders for your pants plus they have a spot on the opposite side you can mount a knife.

My favorite field hoster so far is the Simply Rugged Pancake.

I liked the Galco DAO pretty good and didn't care for the Uncle Mike's I have owned.

Not familiar with Vandermuhlen.

With my Simply rugged I had about 25 field days last year with my redhawk at 5 oclock (just behind the right hip) - hanging over the gunwale of my motor canoe for a lot of that time- never budged. I have a flap for mine but I don't use it, don't need it.

No matter what, get a good (2 layer) belt. A gun that heavy is going to take a regular clothing/ fashion/ single layer leather belt and stetch the snot out of it.

I haven't owned anything from El Paso, but I have read good things baout them and have a hoslter from them in my internet bookmarks. You might also consider Mernickle. I ahven't bought from them yet, but one of these will probably be my next hoslter purchase, to carry something lighter than the Redhawk,

El Paso and Mernickle are excellent, although I think EPS's quality has suffered under younger management.

Bianchi and Galco are too expensive, higher than even some custom leather. Triple K and Hunter are too cheap.

The Galco D.A.O. leather cross draw holster for my Super Redhawk just arrived. It was a simple easy purchase from Midway USA online. It does seem to be more substantial than the Hunter brand I had for my Blackhawk. It was twice the Hunter price. I'm sure the D.A.O. line will fit the Blackhawk as well. My only beef is that the belts I use are a bit thicker and wider than the slots. I know the belt size is mentioned in the description, but I think Galco should beef up this product by sizing it for a larger belt. Not the end of the world seeing as I already have a chest rig as well.
