Anyone have any suggestions on grips to fit a new model Blackhawk (.357 Mag, if caliber matters)? It looks like the previous owner of my gun over tightened the grip screw so that the nut cracked the wood and now they won't tighten up enough to stay in place. I'm interested in something that's not ultra expensive and requires little or no fitting/tweaking....

Probably the best bargain would be to order replacement grips from Ruger. These are laminated wood and impregnated with vinyl and are easily polished up when scarred.
I don't like them personally, but that is just my predudice, as I prefer oiled wood grips, which does get into money.

For ergonomics and shooting comfort I like the Hogue Monogrip. They fit my hands very well and make shooting max loads more comfortable over the stock grips. They change the appearance of the gun a lot, for the better or worse is opinion.
If your gun has the internal lock that can be a problem. I heard Hogue was trying to come up with a solution but don't know if they have yet or not.

Whatever you do for grips in the future, measure your grip frame and use a spacer the same size...By this I mean a small cylinder about the size of the screw escutcheons...You pass the screw through, and the grip panels tighten down on this as well as the grip frame, and this prevents the wood from caving in under tension...Makes for a much tighter fit IMNSHO...You can add one to any setup, just by measuring the grip frame...
I did not like any grips I saw anywhere, and I am also 'parsimonious' to a fault (read 'cheap'), so last year I taught myself to make grips with wood from here at home...
If I can do it, anyone can...

be careful when ordering grips for a Blackhawk. There are a number of different grip frames. Make sure you know which one you have because the grips don't interchange.
The large frame .357 New Model, and the Medium frame .357 New Model take different grips.
A set of stock wood grips can be had for cheap on ebay.

Wow, I don't think you have any idea how wrong you are!
Your grips are gorgeous and I give you a 100% guarantee that there's no way I could do that -- I don't have it in me. If I were required to repeat what you've shown in those pictures in order to get rescued from a deserted island, I would instead go take a swim, crack a coconut, and lay on the beach.
If your New Model BH .357 has a Flat Top frame, it's a medium frame.
If your .357 New Model BH has the more protected rear sight set up with the hump towards the back... like the one pictured above with the faux Ivory grips (nice looking BH by the way)... then it's the large frame.

My first suggestion is Hogue. Guy Hogue, a retired LAPD officer & armorer, is well known for his wood & rubber handgun grips.
I purchased a Tamer Hogue grip for my Ruger GPNY which worked great.

Call me old fashioned, but I like to see traditional grips on a traditional gun such as the Blackhawk. Yes, even if the grips aren't quite as high performance.

I too believe blued steel screams for wood...
I do however also believe that rubber grips have their place...
When I have my full-on hunting load in my Super Blackhawk (22gr H110/Hornady 265gr JFP) I do have an old set of Uncle Mike's #59001 gummy grips that help me shoot that load more comfortably...
The other 10 months of the year the SBH wears wood...

Hogue makes a decent "cowboy" replacement panel but oversized grips on a single action is sacrilege. Especially if they are rubber.

I highly recommend a guy who has made 3 sets of grips for me. He does a lot of Blackhawk grips. He doesn't have a website, but he does have a page that he can show you with examples. Name is Jim Keisling, and his e-mail address is mopar1967@myway.com. Has tons of different woods he uses.
These are zebrawood grips I got from Jim. I asked him to make a "gunfighter" style (a bit slimmer). They are beautiful and were very reasonably priced.
