Ruger Blackhawk Grips

I just sold my Taurus .44 Magnum revolver so I could get another Ruger Super Blackhawk with 7.5 inch barrel and all that good stuff. I used to have one and loved it, but never really liked the grips that came with it. They always seemed so damned small, when I was lighting off the full-house stuff. Any recomendations on new grips?

My grandpa had a set of these for his, but I didn't like the look(they felt okay, and they did dampen the recoil on the 300gr loads).

I found a set of unmarked rubber grip panels at a gun show(like the wood ones 'cept rubber) that I use, and they do help a bit(and they look slick on the Stainless).

Before that, I just used wood ones I cut.. but I'm young, and I like the feel of the gun rolling up in my hand, though on a long day of shooting I do end up feeling it later.

'Way back when' my buddy and I shot his .44 Super Blackhawk a lot! We bouth the thinest pair of calfskin gloves we could find. They looked ever so cool, and the leather gripped the wooden grips just fine. Maybe those glove-wearin' cowboys and Mr. Ruger knew what they were doing.... :D

My .357 Blackhawk now wears rubber Pachmeyer (sp?) grips, and is fine barehanded and full-load.

I believe it probably has to do with letting the grips move in your hand on recoil to soak it up for the bigger rounds. I hated them too for the longest time, and I use the Houge grip on my 41 Mag Blackhawk. I still have the factory grips and I think I might try them out sometime on some more full power loads than I normally shoot to see if they are actually more comfortable. I tried a cylinder full of 20.0gr 2400 Keith loads the other day, and that was enough for me :D

If the grip of the Blackhawk feels too small, but you like the traditional look, you can replace the whole grip frame with one from a Super Blackhawk. It's larger, it's steel, it looks right, and it just screws on without any other modification necessary. You can obtain one through Numrich's Gun Parts catalogue.

Edit: D'OH! (See below)

I changed the grips on my sbh to pachmayr rubber grips. It shoots well and comfortable with them. The trade off is that with the heavy loads, instead of the gun rolling up and the grip sliding through the palm, the rubber really bites into the skin and pulls it down. I had some redness and swelling after a couple of boxes of 300's with the rubber grips. The factory grips are less comfortable on the fingers behind the trigger guard. Its a great gun though and I never come home from the range with any ammo left.

Hogue monogrips...the MOST comfortable grip you will find for the blackhawk hands down. It adds not only a little bit of width, but length to the grip making it feel better all around. Ive got a like new pair for sale from a blackhawk i just sold if your interested...email me at jeffro250@gmail.com

Boy, do I feel stupid, or at least I know I wasn't paying attention. I just read the original post and saw the word SUPER in front of the word Blackhawk, which means my response was, shall we say, a little off. Oops.

On the other hand, maybe I can redeem myself with at least one pertainate observation. A long time ago, I thought the original grips on my Blackhawk .41 mag were also too small (I got over it and have used them a lot for over 20 yrs). I put Packmeyer black rubber grips on it and that seemed to fit much better. That is until I shot some fire-breathers through the gun. We're talking a NM Blackhawk with an ALUMINUM grip frame and a 4 5/8" barrel and a 225 gr. bullet going in the 1300 fps ball park. The recoil was quite manageable otherwise, but it put skid-marks on the palms of my hands as the gun rolled up like a SA will do.
