Ruger auto recommendations

Some police trade-in Ruger P89s with
three standard capacity magazines are
coming on the market in my area.
The price will be $209.00.

I'm contemplating buying one but know
nothing about that model's reputation
or if this is a good price assuming at
least very good condition.

This is not a "must have" purchase.
Rather, it's an "if its a good deal I'll
consider it kind of purchase".

What advice can you offer?

By "standard" capacity, do you mean the 15 rounders that were originally designed for it? If yes, that's a fair deal IMO, if the gun appears to be in good shape. If it is stainless steel, that would be even better.

I'd pass.

The P-89 is a solid gun, but I think you'd do better to spend a bit more and get the greatly improved P-95 (or P-97). You can find them used for about $50 more, and new for about $100 more.

And hi-cap mags (that work) are still easy to come by for very reasonable prices.

(The P-89 was known for durability and reliability, not for accuracy. The P-95 is getting a reputation for all three.)

The P95 is more refined though the P89 is tough as nails. P95's can be had for $300.00 new at gun shows or $330.00 new in stores. I believe the 95 will accept highcaps.

I will show my cards and tell you to go for the P97 in .45ACP but if it must be a 9mm--------seriously consider the P95 IMHO.

Is an humble opinion an oxymoron? ;)

The alloy frames are kinda clunky, but tough as hell and they work.

The polymer P95/97 feel much better, are as good as anything anybody makes IMO.

I'd also pass.

I'd rather have a P95 or P97.

P89 High Caps are still out there and are inexpensive. They fit the P95. (or so I'm told).

P-89 mags will fit the P-95 -- my wife uses them in her P-95. Factory hi-caps are not cheap, but those by other aftermarket sources are.

Although the P-95 is well-built, strong, reliable, and very easy to clean, it's not particularly accurate. My Glock 17 and my Browning Hi Power group much beter than my wife's P-95.

I don't own one, but have looked at the P95 and P97. I think both are great values. I have several Ruger products (10-22, SP101, and Mini-14) and for the money they can't be beat. The only reason I bought a Glock 19 over the P95, is that it fit my hand better. Given that I payed almost twice as much for the Glock ($289 for a P95 vs $489 for the Glock). I think the Ruger semi-auto is a true great value.

That said, I think that any Ruger revolver is a great gun - period.

Sport Amigo!

If the gun is in very-good to excellent shape or better AND those Standard capacity mags are FACTORY ( be darned sure bout that or at least Mec-Gar) then go for it!!!

I have a p-89 which I love! I have Mec-Gar and Pro-mag standard capacity (15) mags.. The Mec-gar are as good or even better than Factory and the Pro mags are sub par. Mag prices-now five years after the "crime-bill" are increasing every six monthes or less now...get your real mags while you can still affored to!!!

( They dont feed as smoothly and some needed their plastic followers smoothed by a hand file...but they do work.. my USA 30 rounders work only in hard-ball due to a cheap stubby follower that cannot be replaced with a Ruger follower from a communist capacity mag. due to feed lip diffrances- at least I ried!)

Again Be sure they are factory or Mec-gars and not some El-chepo mags thrown in to sell the merchandise ( and get rid of mags nobody wants!)...

Peace

I have a P89 blue that I bought new back in 94. It is a good shooter but very large. I use it as a house gun set up with spare mags in a shoulder rig. I hear a noise at night it goes on then a robe over the top. Flashlight in robe pocket and mag light in hand. It is a solid gun that I have thought of selling many times. Talk them down a few $$ and if it is not for carry get it. But only if it fits your hand.

While the P89 is a fine gun.(I have one.) The P95 is a better gun. ( I have one too.) Standard capacity P89 mags do indeed fit in the P95 as well as higher capacity after market mags made for the P89. The P95 is indeed accurate, tough, and reliable.
I think it would be a better buy.

I guess I will throw in my 2 cents. I have a P89 and a P95. I really like them both. I shoot the P89 much more in IDPA because it is a bit bigger, has a longer sighting length, and has adjustable sites made for it by several mfgs. It also takes the Hogue grips just like my P90. I personally don't feel the P95 is any better than the P89. They are both acceptably accurate for me for IDPA and the plate games. I would buy another P89 today if I could get it for $209, and it was in pretty good shape. One thing great about the Rugers, is that all of the 9mms take the same mags, so when you add a new one, you already have a supply of mags on hand.

Ha! Another $.02.
I have an 89 and 95. I like the 95
much better. I too would go for a $250
95 before another 89. I use the 89
for a house gun too.

Memphis, I bought a KP95D for $249.00. If you don't tell anyone, I'll tell ya how I did it. There is a gun store around where I live that has an indoor range and sells cheap lead reloads in bulk for range use. New Ruger P series barrels lead up really quick before the barrels are smoothed out by a few hundred rounds of jacketed bullets. The owner bought 100 rounds of the soft lead reloads to try out his new gun. After about 30 rounds, he couldn't keep it on the paper at 50'. He thought it was the gun, and traded it in on the spot. I got it for $249.00, deleaded the barrel, and it's become one of the best shooters I have.

I'd go for the KP95. Its light, eats everything I feed to it, and is pretty accurate although mine shoots a bit high. I am ordering elev. adj. night sights for it... Therefore, this must be a decent gun to add sights which cost a third of the price of the gun : )
