Actually, the Ruger AR-556, which is simply their AR-15 clone, has always used AR-15 magazines.

It is the Ruger American Ranch, not the AR-556, that has now been redesigned to use AR-15 magazines.

No, it used a proprietary rotary mag that sat flush with the bottom of the stock.
