Ruger and the .22lr

Something I don't get and maybe someone here can shed some light for me. Ruger is a company that IMHO knows how to do the .22 long rifle. The thing that has me stumped is why there is no full size DA 22lr revolver:confused:

I currently have one of there semi pistols and 10/22. Sure would like to round that off with a 6" GP100 rimfire.

Anyone know why they don't have this sort of thing in there line-up? I would think with todays current ammo prices that there should be a big market for it. I really don't wanna pay $1000 for a SW 617.

Also, the quality of the 10/22 I just purchased for my nephew is just not the same as my well loved (old school) version. One last question... Is Ruger still making the Walmart version of the 10/22 (22" stainless with wood stock)? If so where can I get it?

Thanks in advance,

I would guess that there is not that much of a market for large DA rimfire revolvers. I would love to discuss the quality issues of the new 10/22, but this is the handgun section. Post the 10/22 comment in the rifle forum and see what you get. Steve

Ruger used to offer a D/A 22 revolver. It didn't sell, so it was discontinued. The ones they made turn up from time to time but I have never seen one live and in person. They normally sell for about the same price you'd expect to pay for a nice Smith & Wesson 22 D/A. As far as I know, they never made a 6" barrel version though. Four inches is about as long as I remember hearing about, but I'm not an expert by any means.

The 10/22 I looked at in WalMart last nite had a nice wood stock and, imho, looked waaay better than the cheapo looking plastic ones that were at the gunshop. $207 @ wallyworld. $259 @ the gunshop. You ae right, though the company made it's name with the .22lr. I absolutely love my mkII.

I have a stainless 4" SP101 in 22lr. It looks just like it 357 mag big brother. Very nice gun. They discontinued it several years back. You dont see them very often and when you do they are priced very high. I've seen them sell for $600! Every once in a while you see them on Gun Broker.
I picked mine up at a gun show this summer for $450.

As others have mentioned, the market for a full-sized .22 DA revolver, just may not be there. Smith has that market locked up very tightly with the Model 617. New, they run about $850.

However, don't despair. There are used ones out there, and don't forget, that the Models 17 and 18 (K22 Masterpiece and Combat Masterpiece respectively) can be found used for decent prices. .22's revolvers tend not to get shot to pieces. They can be had for $400 and up, depending on condition. The Model 17 is a target revolver, usually with a 6" barrel; and the Model 18 is a "Combat Masterpiece", usually found with a 4" barrel.

Besides the Smiths, there are also Colt Troopers, Officer's Model Match, and Diamondback models. While they run a bit more than comparable S&W's, but they can be had, and they're a ball to shoot.

The Walmarts all around me say they are getting rid of all their firearms. THEY said all Walmarts will be discontinuing firearms sales. On their website they do not list the firearms anymore. That is why I asked about it. I would hate to see that rifle go the way of the Doo Doo.

The manufacture that has what I am looking for is Taurus. Their model 94. Was going to get one but after handling one I am going to pass. Maybe I will give their Tracker model a try. Can't find one for a good price used. $600 for the SW and $550 for the SP101. DW are running for high dollars also.

The smiths sure do shoot good! I've read lots of posts about people not liking their Taurus Trackers, so you could probably get a really good deal on a used one. I'm not too fond of the few taurus products I've tried, but they DO build a platform you're looking for.
