Ruger American

Micro man

New member
I thought I would try my hand at some minor Gunsmithing, but have an issue.

I own a Ruger American in 308W and decided to replace the stock with a Boyd
AT-ONE adjustable stock and AI Magazine kit.
After some struggles I got it put together but am having an issue with closing the bolt. It will close to within about 1/2 an inch of full closing but no further.

I cannot see where it is binding and tried it with and without a mag inserted with no luck.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Did you try putting it back in the old stock and does it work fine? Was your rifle originally using the AI mag set up? Have you called Boyd's?

I have not tried to put the old stock back on. The AI mag set is a new addition to the rifle and I will try and call Boyd’s on Monday and see that they think.

Try again with action screws backed out.

Good catch, I didn't even think of the action screws being too long.

I should proofread better, my fat fingers made a mess of my post!

If the binding disappears when action screws backed out, the screws are too long and they interfere with the action. They need to be shortened.

I contacted Boyd’s, they said to reduce the tension on the screws to 25/30 inch pounds, it made no difference. I removed the action screws and bolt travels freely, just as several members commented I think one of the action screws I used is too long. Will try a shorter one tomorrow.
