Ruger American vs. Marlin x7...

Just read through your post. Actually, I had read most of it before, but re-read it. Before I posted my question I was leaning towards the Ruger. I really think the removable magazine is a plus, but thought I should hear if any X7 fans had any input that would make me go for the Marlin. Lots of good firearms out there. Good to have choices, heh!

Thinking about The Marlin XL7 myself in .308. For $313 from buds and some good reviews its looking real appealing.

Another X7 option is the X7-VH in .308, starts around $359 at Buds :)

Heavy varmint barrel, adjustable target trigger, pillar bedded at the factory, factory recoil pad, fluted bolt...
and Sub-MOA right from the box :)

You can't beat the X7 in its Standard Form in the "under $1500 category"...
the VH version literally obliterates anything else on the market under $1500 bucks.

Buy it, you'll like it ;)

just did a little research on that marlin heavy barreled 308 . it looks pretty nice http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FeW03fUs1uk&feature=related if it came in 7mm mag i'd have to give it some serious thought . Im looking for a long range gun with a heavy barrel for bench and prone shooting which I think the marlin would work well for . I don't think I would want to carry it around all day on a hunt though.

Good save, thats actually the rifle I saw the video one

Definitely want this rifle. That way I can give up the PPS I'm saving up for and get both the rifle and a cheaper ccw (cm9, lc9, etc.)

My first rifle, which I bought early this year was Marlin 60 and was impressed with the quality and accuracy.

It would be nice to have a shop near by that carried both. Nothing like a hands on side by side. I have handled the Ruger in a shop, now have to find a Marlin. Maybe my local gun shop will order both with the understanding I will buy one...

That said, I think the detachable mag will make the difference for me. Thanks for all who replied to my post. I was afraid I would get some "Here we go again" remarks. (aka flames)!

I owned the Ruger for about 2 weeks. Couldn't sell it fast enough. The detachable mag was the deal killer, I'd much rather have the reliability of the Marlins blind mag. Accuracy of the Ruger was average at best.

jmr40 - I would love to argue with you about the accuracy of the Ruger . However I do know that if the for-end of the stock makes contact with the barrel you will lose accuracy . The forend of the stock has more movement then it should . Because of this the stock can and will make contact with the barrel if shooting with a front rest or bi-pod . The accracy will drop to about 2 MOA or so . I have many photos posted on TFL of this issue and how well it shoots when the barrel is completely free floated . If you were only getting 2MOA goups or so I would bet that was the issue .

I however can shoot .75-.80 MOA with my American no problem . If that is average at best , you are a much better shot then I :)

As for the mag . I have only shot about 250 rounds out of the rifle and never had a problem yet . I will say this , the mag pops in to the mag well so effortlessly you think it's not locked in but it is . You don't here a big clunk or click it just goes in and stays in .

I have an x7 in .270. Sub MOA accurate with factory ammo, great adjustable trigger, fluted bolt, bedded barrel etc. What's not to like? I will say this though, the magazine like 3 rounds a lot better than 4. Hard to get 4 in there just right, but seems to be smoothing out.
