Ruger American .22 or Marlin XT-22 TSR

I am looking at getting another .22 rifle and these are the two that I am thinking about for squirrel hunting after deer season ends .

I like some of Ruger's options like , the raised comb stock , the grooved forearm , the 10-22 magazines and the compact size option .

I like the stainless steel barrel on the Marlin and the tube magazine with the option of shooting S , L , LR ammo .

Looking for opinions from people that have one or both . What do you like and dislike about yours . How is it's accuracy compared to the 10-22 and 60 ?

Great post. I too am looking at the same two choices for the same reasons. I think Boyd's has a wood stock for the Ruger. Wish someone with experience would answer. I have lever, pump, and auto 22s. I want a bolt too.

I have owned both in the .22 mag version. The Marlin was a standard blue/wood version; the Ruger is the compact version. When I bought the Ruger, I sold the Marlin. I like the Ruger much better-the box mag and tang safety are a big plus. The compact version is much handier without giving up any velocity.

I own a Marlin XT-22 stainless, and I must say it is a wonderful gun. At fifty yards with the iron sights I can get some amazing groups. It is also fairly light and has a nice fit. If you are not set with the blued gun, I would reccomend a stainless gun. It is so much easier to maintain and you don't have to worry about rust AS MUCH and I think it looks plain badass!

I have the Ruger American in 17 HMR. Great rifle. It's accurate and handy and handles like a center fire rifle.

I did some ammo testing today with my Marlin 60 . These were just 3 shot groups @ 50 paces , using a Bullsbag rest , 2-7x28 rimfire scope .

Wolf Match Extra .348
Aguila Match Rifle .363
Wolf Match Target .458

Ruger 10/22 Deluxe , Weaver 3-9x32 ao scope , Volquartsen Target Hammer .

Shot last year .

Wolf .603
Aguila .691
Winchester Super X .751

The 10/22 was more accurate with shelf ammo .

Winchester Super X .751
CCI Mini Mag .770

Marlin 60 :

WinchesterSuper X .933
CCI SGB .920
CCI Mini Mag 1.87

Worlds apart accuracy wise? Wow seems biased huh. Not close at all the Marlin is a great rifle, i punch the same holes at 50 yards with my xt22 no problem. I adjusted the the trigger and off to the range I went. Personally im not a fan of any of the ruger american guns. They all feel flimsy and cheap. again completely a biased opinion. Then again im a wood guy so not a fair comparison over all.

I have the Compact version in .22LR and .22 Magnum and find them to be light, easily handled in the field, comfortable to shoot, and capable of outstanding accuracy. Highly recommend them to our customers.

My American Rimfires replaced a Marlin XT22M, and a Savage FVSR, and 93FV.

Accuracy wasn't an issue with any, as I find they all shot about the same, I'm the limiting factor there.

For my uses, the Ruger just had a better synthetic stock with better bedding, a worlds better magazine, a better trigger design, a better barrel length (18" is perfect for me) with open sights, and better balance in my hands.
