Ruger Alaskan 4" - Would you buy this?

Question: If Ruger make a SRH Alaskan in .454 casull with a 4" or 4.5" barrel, but a *full-lug* or "full-shroud" 4 inch bbl, not a ridiculous-looking "stepped-down" barrel, would you jump on it?

I know I would. The 2" bbl is just too short.

I have the first Bowen GP44, a .454 Alaskan converted to a four-inch barrel in .44 Mag.
It has, in fact, a standard Redhawk barrel, cut back from 5.5 inches & re-sighted.

Had no interest in the .454 caliber.
Otherwise, the gun is already heavy enough without a full underlug & I'd have no interest in that barrel configuration. Even if I had left it in .454. :)

Do agree the snub barrel is too short, though.

Yes.
Simply yes.

I think the little .454 Alaskan looks fantastic. Very cool looking gun.

I have no means of justifying one, but if there were the same look in 4" form, I'd take a long hard look at getting one.

I agree with feets.

My 4.0 inch 45 Redhawk will push a 345 grain Beartooth bullet to 1235 fps. That's more than enough for a 45.

But a 4 inch Redhawk in 480 would be fun to play with.

This thread comes up every once and awhile, That's why I keep this pic ready to go on my photobucket.

I think he's referring to a little nubbie 1-1/2" barrel poking out of the 2-1/2" Super Redhawk frame.

A 4" Super would not have enough room on the barrel for the factory front sight. That would be a wee bit odd looking.

As much as I like a 4" Redhawk they can be a bit funny looking. Now, take up an extra 1-3/4" of that barrel with the extended frame and you end up with a funky looking gun.

This Super has a 5" barrel. Imagine taking another inch out of there and doing something with the front sight.

Venom, that would be an awesome piece, especially if it was ported.

It would like a stronger and better built Bull. Better looking too.

Ya lost me...

The entire point of the "Alaskan" is that it is short, packable, and does not have the silly Super Redhawk barrel...

Lengthen the barrel, and it is not an "Alaskan"...

There u go feets. ;) I entered a better version (photoshop, this ones just in paint) for the 'Rugers next gun' thing I had my fingers crossed but no luck.

Lengthen the barrel, and it is not an "Alaskan"...
He's using the alaskan as an example he likes the aesthetics of that model vs the regular style of the SRH with the exposed smooth barrel. He's saying if they made a SRH with the style i.e. appearance of the Alaskan would you be more interested in it?

See Venom's post above.

He wants a 4" Super without the step down from the frame to the barrel.

The Alaskan doesn't have a stepped down barrel. He likes that. Now, stretch it out a wee bit longer and he's happy.

I thought that the entire point of the Alaskan is to sell an oversized snub nosed revolver to folks in the lower 48 who want to look cool and impress their friends at the range.

uhhh.... ***KABLOOIE!!!*** Sorry about that Mr Wrist. Hope you feel better soon.

You can push a Redhawk to the point that it does as much damage to you as it does to the bear. So why do people want at 454 snub nose revolver? See my comment above.....

A few weeks ago I was in my local gun shop and one of the employees was carrying an Alaskan on his hip. I wonder what it would sound like to fire that thing indoors....
