I didn't but I wanted to. They wanted $939

I thouht the 44 mag had a fluted cylinder and the 454 / 45 colt is for a fact unfluted.

Did they do a special run? I can not read cal marking on pictured gun.

939 would be avg for what I see the 454 in shops here for, would be high for the 44 mag, I see them at 850.

If you want the 44mag in a small pkg the talo 44 redhawk snub looks very appealing

I opted for the Talo Super Blackhawk in 3.75 barrel. Like 300-400 bucks cheaper, special run, and a nice single action trigger.

What is the attraction of such a short barrel magnum, that might lose enough velocity to not be a magnum?
Especially when the grip is still longer than the barrel.

You give up a bit of velocity to save on weight/ease of carrying. My 3.75 in. barrel compared to a 4 5/8, the loss in velocity is very small, but 5.5 and bigger you'll see why longer barrels are better for hunting+better sight picture. However, some heavy .44 special ammo works very well also in a short barrel.

What's that old saying -- you never pay too much, just too soon.

I recently picked up the same gun in .480 Ruger. I paid $860 if I remember orrectly (there's one listed on the Ruger forum classifieds for $795 delivered.

Surprisingly, the .480 only weighs 42.8 oz (50.2 oz w/6 400gr rounds) on my digital kitchen scale. In fact I carried it yesterday while walking the dogs. Don't know what it is about the profile/weight distribution, but I really didn't notice the weight.

I chronographed 385gr HPs at 1,050 fps from the 2 1/2" Alaskan -- the same ammo thru my 6" Freedom Arms .475 LB chronos right at 1,250 fps.

For a "Jumbo Belly Gun" it is surpisingly accurate and easy to shoot. Here's a target I shot from a rest while doing some chronographing.

a great gun as a backpacking or hunting sidearm...but a bear on the hands with full house ammo..I picked mine up for 850 new in box and sold it for the same about a.month later and bought a 5inch S&W629 and later an 8inch 629

I bought one last year and ended up selling it as well.
The main reason as with most of the Ruger Revolvers is the Transfer Bar Rattle.

They says it's Normal but I still was not enthused.

Buy it and don't look back! 3 years into having one and absolutely love this revolver. Ruger makes a nice carry vest for this as well, love it!
