I have a Ruger rifle M-77 MarkII 30-06 all-weather model. The rifle was able to shoot sub MOA with manufacture ammo. After fitting this rifle with Mcmillan stock which has the barrel free floated, the groups now are 4" to 7" at it's best. Please advise how to correct the problem. Many thanks.

Some rifles prefer a slight upward pressure point near the end of the forearm. This might be one of them. Did the original stock have a foreend pressure point?

Loosen the action, and try putting a piece of inner tube (better since waterproof) or cardboard under the foreend, retorque it, and see if the groups tighten up. You will have to experiment, but you do not need a lot of upward pressure.

700PSS is headed in the right direction. I've always used kitchen wax paper, cutting a 3/4" strip and folding it back and forth until it's thick enough. Maybe a five-pound pull to make enough gap between the barrel and the stock to slip the shim into place, out by the fore-end tip. Trim with a razor or knife-point...

It acts like the shock absorber on a car, damping the vibrations. The key to tight groups is uniformity of the barrel vibrations from shot to shot. Sometimes, free-floated barrels aren't uniform.

I've done this with most of the rifles I've ever owned; it has always helped get tighter groups.

Hope this helps, Art

I bought one at a gun show a couple of years ago for cheap. I took it to South Africa on a hunting trip, and a friend of mine there really wanted it. He started shooting benchrest competitions, and use it in the hunter production class. It is totally stock except for some trigger work and barrel lapping. He shot a .361 group at 100 yards, which would have been a new SA record if it was shot in a sanctioned match.

Just a couple things to check. Is the recoil lug fitting firmly against the stock? It may need some bedding compound. Is there ample clearance (no touching) around the trigger assembly and safety? File away if it touches. Did you tighten the stock properly? With the action pulled back as far as possible, (the muzzel pushed against a carpeted floor) tighten the front screw first. TIGHT! Next tighten the rear screw, TIGHT. Then snug up the center screw just tight enough so it won't come loose. Allthough sold as bolt-ons these stocks sometimes need some tweeking. Had the trigger problem on a 700 mt rifle once and after a call to my gunsmith and a few minutes with a file it came around just fine. This is my first post on TFL but I've been nosing around here for about a week. Nice place ya got here. Decided to keep the same handle that I use on other sights even though after twenty years I had to give up the truck and cart to save my back for hunting. Good to meet ya all.

Did you specicy what bullet weight?
The WIFE has a Browning A-Bolt in 30-06 and I have an older model Ruger 77 in 30-06.

WE load a 165 Hornady BTHP with:
46.5 grains of Winchester 748. We get "about", because I don't have a groupe to measure. It's worth a try...
