Ruger 77 Target

Ruger Target

BK, not too well.............
"IF", you can get your hands on a 77VLE, then they are shooters......will hold sub moa, cold barrel, hot barrel.........
Not easy to get, as they are classified by Rug as LE.....they have an excellent military 2 stage trigger, and a hammer forged barrel...unlike the normal Rug's.
But, unfortunately, Ruger has a rep for the worst barrels in the business.
Couple that along with the reciever set up, and you got problems.
I'd take the Rem 700, or the Savage, with a decent trigger, and stock over a Ruger any day.
The edge of course to Rem, as you can always count on them for aftermarket parts, and customization if you so desire.

No, only in the Ruger LE catalog.............
They come with a Black laminated stock, and a matte dark blue barrel, or a new finish, that looks like AR 15 (Bushmaster Black), flat in hue.
I had one a long while back, it shot under 1 moa, even with a HOT barrel........really impressive............
Try to find out who is a Ruger LE dealer in your area, and get a look at their catalog.

Guys, a hammer forged barrel is not a good thing - You get way too many imperfections.

I'd go with a Savage 12BVSS-S for out of the box accuracy. Best bang for the buck.

You are partly right about Rugers

and partly wrong. The Ruger VT has the same barrel contour and adjustable two stage trigger as your 'cops only' model, plus a laminated stock, and the neat Ruger matte grey stainless finish throughout, and anyone can order one. The one example I have shot, in .25-06, was a half-minute rifle out of the box, and the very manageable two-stage trigger was fine right from the factory at two and a half lbs. Not cheap, and it's true that you might be able to pick up a Remington or Savage (both good guns) for a good deal less. But of all the Rugers, the VT is the one I'd lay out money for today.
The story about Ruger 77 barrels being bad is hokum. A few slipped by QC about 7 or 8 years ago, and gave the whole series a bad name. Poor accuracy in Ruger rifles is almost always a stocking problem, and easily fixed. My old-style tang-safety 77R 7x57 puts 139 gr. Hornady SP's into nice round one inch groups with an old 4x Weaver 'scope on it, and all I did was relieve the forend contact on the barrel and lighten the trigger. As a pure-quill hunting rifle, it's just fine.
