The extractor should grip the case until it hits the ejector. If the case is just dropping when it comes out of the chamber, check the extractor, not the ejector.
Tang safety Ruger 77s have a spring-loaded ejector. If it is not ejecting, either the spring is damaged or the plunger is jammed with crud. Remove the bolt, drive out the retainer pin, clean it all up. If the spring or the ejector is damaged, you can get parts from Numrich. Also, like Jim said, check the extractor for wear.
Easy enough!! I was wondering about that screw and plate. I would of done that before, but from past experience from taking parts of guns (springs flying off...etc) I didn't want any surprises. Took apart bolt and cleaned, having same problem.
The bolt grabs the casing, starts to slide it out, but before it gets to the ejection opening it kinks a little(casing) and then drops.
Well, I have a two year old M77 Mark II Stainless "All Weather" with a three position safety on the bolt and have the exact same problem with extraction! The extractor will pull the case out of the chamber and then just looses its grip on the case and leaves it lying in the port. I too am using Remington factory loads in plain brass. I have watched the function closely and can't see where the problem is. I have tried to work the bolt both lightly and firmly and it doesn't make a difference. The rifle has done this since day one and thus I am now going to send it off the factory for inspection.
