I bought my son who is 8 years old a Ruger 77/357 bolt action rifle. This is his first year he is going deer hunting with me. I have been loading some 158gr Sierra JSP bullets for him with 15.7gr of H110.He has been target shooting at 50 yds with a scope and he is keeping a good 2" or less group. My question is what kind of range is this caliber good for out of a rifle. I won't let him take a shot any farther than 50 yds with it anyway but I am just curious how far this caliber could effectively take a deer. Thanks

probably 100 yards or so. after that holdover and wind drift become very problematic especially when for an inexperienced shooter. good choice for a first rifle though, very lightweight and very low recoil. my first weighed about 2 pounds more and more kick and I developed a flinch that took years to cure.

I was at the range when this chap was reviewing this rifle. With the scope, it was very accurate to 100 yards. And out of a rifle the .357 mag cartridge has bags of energy for most game. Actually out of a 6 inch handgun it would smoke most game almost out to 100 yards... if you could hit them right. But don't go saying that out loud.
