Ruger 77 22 scope mount please help a newbie!

I have just mail ordered a new ruger 77 22 and was able to get a really good deal on it.
I would like to mount a scope on it. Is it true that these rifles need their own special Ruger type of scope rings or do they take regular rings? I would like to mount a scope with 40mm objective and a one inch tube. The reasons I am asking is that I have a whole bunch of rings lying around but they might fit the Ruger.

Thanks,

Fred.

I'm pretty sure the mini-14 rings will work, but be careful about buying some used rings off a 77, 77MK-II or Hawkeye.

Ruger rings are all the same. On the 77/22, mini-14, and the revolvers the front and rear ring are the same height. On the centerfire bolt guns you would use 1 size taller ring on the rear than on the front. The rear receiver bridge is lower than the front. By using a high ring on the rear and a medium on the front you have what Ruger calls medium rings.

If you want low rings you only have to buy 1 low ring. Move the medium ring to the rear and put the low on the front.

You could use rings made for the 77 on the 77/22, but you would have to find 2 of the same height.

Do the Ruger rifles not come with rings from the factory?

I'm almost certain they do, but I got my 77MKII .308 and my 77/22 .22LR used so I don't know for sure first hand.

Be careful of scope size.

I just ordered a set of high base rings for a M77V, old tang safety rifle. Those rings will accomodate up to a 42mm objective bell. The 5B and 6B are the highest rings ruger offers on their web site.

A lot of newer scopes have objective bells larger than 50mm and that could be a problem using Ruger rings.

I think Warne and Leupold both offer rings that will bolt up to the Ruger design but have not looked into whether that would work on an older M77 that has rings of different heights for the front and rear.
