Any .44 Magnum or .44 Special ammunition can be used. The .44 Special is milder in recoil, the Magnums are very accurate and pack the punch needed for hunting.

Your gun would be stainless steel, Ruger didn't make any nickeled plated Vaqueros.

As you say it is fun to shoot, and a very good revolver.

Concur with Bob... Any .44Mag, .44Spec, .44Russian can be fired from your revolver. Of course, if you reload you can 'refine' your choices :) .

If shooting factory (or even reloading), there is really no 'best' that I or anyone else could give you.... For each gun is slightly different, so you have to find out what is 'best' in your gun that shoots to POA.

Ruger highly-polished some of the stainless steel Vaquero's to emulate the Nickle finish on some original Colt SAA's - if/when one gets scratched, simply polish out the marks.

You'll most likely need to try various factory loads (or handloads if you can/do), with the object of finding a load that will shoot to the fixed sights at whatever range pleases you.

There's a plethora of aftermarket grip panels (both with or w/o Ruger logo medallions), in whatever material (Stag, Simulated Ivory, exotic woods, etc) suits you, if you'd like to switch them out; ditto, holsters.
