Ruger 44 Carbine

Anyone out there use one? Do you have a scope on it? I inherited one from my late FIL and think this could make a heck of a swamp gun for the hogs and deer. My eyes need optics these days and I'm looking to scope this thing out. Considering a red dot or low power scope to go on it. Not looking to break the bank on it just a good general service system.

I have the old one. The only change that I made to is was to put on a cheap recoil pad that was made for the mini 14. Not much trimming was necessary and it is now a pleasure to shoot. I use it for my heavy brush gun. It is light and quick. Its score is 1 Mulie, 1 Whitetail, and 6 hogs. Because it is used in heavy brush, there is no scope.

The last one I had..I put a 2 3/4 power scope on it....It was perfect....These guns are short with low recoil....

I got one of the old ones

I got one of the old ones also. I traded a Ruger 44 Super Blackhawk for it and the guy gave some cash to sweeten the deal. I installed a scope on it and have since removed the scope. Lot easier to quick point with the iron sights for me anyway. Have fun. A really nice rifle.

For the price these carbines were selling for back then, I considered them bargains. I have an older one myself and have a 4X scope on it. I get excellent groups with mine using WW-296 and jacketed bullets.

Keep in mind the Ruger manual says not to use lead bullets as they can cause problems with the gas mechanism.

You don't want to shoot cast bullets in it , as they will clog the gas port with lead ! You want a scope that doesn't have a bell on the front end , so you can mount it low , so it doesn't snag brush . I like a 1 3/4 - 5 X 20 or 24 . I too can't use irons anymore !

I own the lever version in 44MAG. The scope is a cheap but sturdy TASCO shotgun scope featuring 2.5X. It holds it's zero year after year. I've owned this scope since the mid-1990's; its a keeper!

Used to have one, wish I'd never sold it, but I was poor and thought the ammo too expensive. Should have just put it away for a while until I was making more money...

Great light brush rifle, hits hard, and the existing iron sights were just fine for me. I don't like a scope at short range, in brush, or with fast, dangerous game.

It will knock an elk over in it's tracks at 125 yards, don't know about any longer ranges. Here in the evergreen northwest, most of my game was taken at 50 yards or less in dense woods.

Not to veer away but a quick question, does .44 special ammunition work in these carbines? Does it have enough power cycle ?

Yes, I have one--vintage 1971.
Shoots great and quite accurate.
I use a 2x scope on it and it's
great for the Northeast woods.

They were really popular back in the 70's and 80's. Ive got a bunch of buds down in FL still using them. Id put a 2.5 Leupy or Aimpoint (Ultra Dot is you want to save some $) on it. Great truck guns.

I have one of the last run, called Deerfield carbine and put a small 4X in the standard Ruger 1" rings. It likes 240gr jacketed soft points run hard and fast. The load is not safe in most .44 Mag revolvers and not much fun in a Redhawk but it really makes this handy little rifle happy.
