Hi all.
A couple of weeks ago, I bought a very lightly used (at least to my untrained eye) Ruger Mk.II KM77VT .223 rifle. They call this their "Target" rifle. It's a very handsome gun, with a laminated hardwood stock and a satin-finish SS 26" heavy barrel. I put a Leupold Vari-X III 4.5-14X50mm scope on it.
What I wanted when I bought this gun was an accurate rifle that was fairly inexpensive to shoot. So far, I haven't been all that impressed. I've tried several different brands of factory ammo; the gun seems to like the Winchester Super-X 55-grain PSP and the Winchester USA 45-grain JHP the best so far.
I use sandbags under the forend and rabbit ears under the stock, so I have a pretty stable rest. But my best shooting so far has been 5-shot groups at around the MOA level.
Shouldn't this rifle shoot well under MOA? Like on the order of .5 MOA?
I haven't ruled out pilot error, but I've always been a pretty decent shot. I also haven't found anyone else to shoot this rifle yet who I *know* is an expert shot.
I'm just wondering if this particular gun is an example of the occasional excursions in QC that most major manufacturers experience.
Any and all advice/help greatly appreciated!
