Ruger 22/45MKIII and 1911 grips.

so after reading several times that the newer MKIII 22/45s were designed to accept 1911 grip panels I went out and bought some hogue 1911 grips. they dont fit. just figured I'd make that little public service announcement right off the bat. luckily, I know a guy with a lathe who isn't afraid to mess up a $30 chunk of plastic, managed to clearance the grips enough to allow the slide release to work. I decided against trying to line up the mag release inlets and left them as is. all in all they go with the gun alright if you don't look too closely, but things definitely do not sit in the same place they would on a 1911.

On my my sig XO 1911 it came with ergo grips. They are on my 22/45 now with a little modification. They fit my hand better than the stock ruger grips.

There's one thing I really don't care for when adapting actual 1911 style grip panels for the Ruger Mark III 22/45 grip frames. It's that dang cut-out for the mainspring housing assembly pin. Really, how often does that pin need access to it? How hard is it to remove the grip panels?

When I do set aside time to make grip panels for the 22/45 Ruger variants, I think the panels look much cleaner without that cut-out on the bottom rear corner.

Tahunua, My current 22-45 is the older type with grips molded as part of the frame. I really appreciate your posting this though for future reference. This might save me some aggravation and expense on a future Ruger pistol.

All this time I thought 1911 grips fit without modification on a MkIII 22/45. I was wrong. How about the MkIV? Thinking about buying a MkIV, that's why I ask.

no idea on the MK4. I know they look more 1911-ish so they may have changed , but I don't know anyone with the MK4 so I haven't done that comparison.
