Thinking about getting my son an inexpensive 22 auto. Got it narrowed down to these two specific guns. Blued, both have a sug retail of about $250, which means I should be able to get either for about $190. Does anyone have experience with either of these two specific pistols? Which would you recommend and why??? Thanks, Twoinchgroup52.

Dear TWOINCH,
I have a Ruger P512 which is a 22/45 with a 5.5 in barrel. For an inexpensive .22 it is very accurate. I routinely hit soda can size targets with just one shot at 25 yards. The gun has fully adjustable target sights which help a lot. I would reccomend buying the Ruger.

I have the Ruger 22/45 and think it is a great gun. Accurate, reliable, inexpensive and backed by Ruger's famous reputation for customer service. Go with the Ruger.

I have had the Browning but traded it. About a month ago I bought a 22/45 and I love it. My vote goes for the 22/45. Regards, Dennis

I'll stick up for the Buckmark here. I love mine. But, I can't knock the Ruger.

A friend of mine recently purchased a new Buckmark Camper for (I think) $162. The store was clearing everything out to re-model, so they had it for $10 over cost (or such was the claim). It looked like a great deal to me, so I suggested it to him (it's his first firearm, and he was trying to decide between a Ruger and a Browning). It seems like a very nice pistol. One thing I noticed is that I think it's a little lighter than other Browning and Ruger pistols (a good thing, if you plan to carry it hiking, etc.). But I'm not positive of this. We took it plinking, and it worked fine. I kind of wish I'd bought one myself at that price.

One point in the Ruger's favor is that it's available in stainless steel - that would be a plus to me. I don't think you can go far wrong with either choice.

I have a Magna Port SS Ruger
Mk1 with all the fixins,
and also have a Buckmark 5.5 and a interchangable 9"75in varmit barrel w/Redfield "RIP" 2x7 That will flat out put 10 shots under a dime at 50'
I dont like to load the mags for the mk1
I prefer the buckmark overall

I had the basic buckmark and sold it because I was into the cool looking is better mentality when I bought my 22/45. I like the look of the Bull barrel ruger but I have to admit the Buckmark performed better in terms of functionability and ease of takedown. I found the new Colt Woodsman and the S&W22a to be an intriguing substitute.

Gun Tests (05/99) tested the Ruger 22/45, the S&W 22A, and the Buckmark Camper.

Ruger 22/45: "Buy it. Cheaper and more accurate than the other guns, it also duplicates the feel of a 1911. Also, its trigger is classic Bullseye, making it the perfect cheap date for your centerfire 45."

S&W 22A: "The trigger makes it a lot of fun to shoot, and making use of the built-in scope mount should make it deadly....Buy it."

Buckmark Camper: "Don't buy. Even though the weakest sister of the trio was a pretty good shooter, we found the finish to be substandard. Also, relying on the grip panels to retain small parts caused an unnecessary nuisance."
