Ruger 22/45 MKIII -doesnt strip mag, no load 'em

max it

HI Guys,

I need to figure out what is next; new .22 pistol and most times the first round doesnt chamber. It produces jams. I have to reinsert mag after tipping up first round. Usually next ones ok. Factory mags. We took the blue off the loading ramp to make it smoother but they hit too low. Is it the bolt? Is it the hollow points?{which i doubt as the snap caps do the same}. Ruger techie; says it is caused by not seating no. 10 in mag low and back in line. So I tried that to some success. But not completely..

Developing....

Either the mag is defective or it is not fully seated. The MKIII uses a button type mag release and may require a bit harder "bump" to fully seat than the old heel type.

When you insert the mag, bump it hard with the heel of your hand and see if that corrects the problem. If not, and it is a new gun, return it to the dealer.

Most likely, a bit of file work on the mag catch notch would fix the problem, but on general principles the customer should not have to repair a new gun.

One note: It is better on most .22 auto pistols to insert a loaded magazine with the bolt open. Sometimes, inserting the mag with the bolt closed will cause the first round to hang up. I don't know if this applies or not, but thought it worth mentioning.

magazine is causing failure to load

Jim,

your advise is well taken. I called Ruger and the techie gave me much the same except yours was more detailed. I ran out to the garage and tried some of it but I didnt kick the heel hard enough. I think we are onto something. Funny that it takes so much effort: my daughter just about gave up on semi's for this, she looks like wheelguns are it for her.

much obliged,

If it turns out to work OK when the mag is fully seated, but you have to bump it hard, you can try using a small file to take just a hair off the TOP of the magazine catch slot in the magazine. The ideal will be when the magazine can be seated with just a moderate push and works.

mag catch slot?

HI Jim,

Soon I am going to figure out how to upload pics {with arrows edited in} but meantimes; if you will indulge me.

the "Mag catch slot": is that the 11/32 x 5/32" slot on the leading edge, sort of catty corner with a bump out one?

much obliged,

Max

Zee,

I finally called Ruger, their techie explained that I needed to 'seat' the bullets after loading. Also a few guys here and on Rimfire.com told me to knock it back after loading the mag that is, so that the rims are in line. Also to heel the mag real good. ONe fellow suggested taking a hair off the mag holder thingie, which i couldnt find. But anyway something clicked and it works. Call Ruger when needed.

keep your powder dry,

max
