Ruger 10/22

I'm getting my first gun, a Ruger 10/22 very soon. How easy is it to install a new extended magazine release on it? I don't like the factory magazine release and would like one that sticks out a little. Also, I'm looking for a ventilated hand guard, and I saw one, but it seems that you have to take off the rear sight.

Where is a good place to order those two pieces that I need? Also, I might want to install a Choate pistol grip stock in the future. How easy are these to install, and will I have to lose the sights in order to install it? I saw a picture of it in the Bushmaster catalog, and I can't see a rear sight on it.

Hi Comrade.

Glad to see you here. I just discovered it myself. Replacing the magazine release is rather easy. If you can disassemble and reassemble an Axis lock, you can do this. The other nice thing about the 10/22 is all of the aftermarket accessories. See you around Comrade Chang.

mag release

The only mildly tricky part about exchanging the mag release is (if you are not even slightly mechanically inclined) re-assembling the plunger that hols and releases the mag. Be sure to go slowly and note how everything comes apart and in what orientation they are in when in place.

If you buy one of the plastic extended mag releases like the ones they sell at Cabela' and Cheaper Than Dirt, you might have to trim some of the plastic that rubs against the bolt release. It could hang up the bolt release (if you have the quick bolt release). Not really a big deal and it is the mag release I always get. Not sure if you have to do this to the Butler Creek plastic mag releases. The metal mag releases should be closer the the stock mag release dimensions.

Choate makes a plastic handguard for the barrel that attaches just in front of the receiver. There is a cutout for the rear sight to go through. How much of the rear sight you actually see when it is in place, I don't know. There is also a perforated handguard for the part of the barrel that extends in front of the stock at Cabela's but see no real use for this except for visual effects.

Lightening the trigger, converting the bolt release to a quick bolt release, changing barrels, installing an adjustable trigger, etc. are all easy to accomplish by yourself.
