Ruger 10/22; Which one?

I am planning on purchasing a Ruger 10/22 in the near future. it will be used for informal plinking and possibly some rimfire competition.

I plan on adding a bull barrel and a quality scope. However I can't decide between .22LR and .22WMR.

Any suggestions? Pros/Cons of either caliber?

The 10/22 .22lr is much cheaper that the .22mag. .22lr ammo is considerably cheaper than .22mag. .22lr ammo can range anywhere from $0.79/box cheapos to $10.00/box match. Not as much choice for .22mag.

The 10/22 .22mag I bought had the absolute worst trigger of any gun I have put my hands on. I did not check the trigger feel at the time of purchase as some places/people don't like to dry fire .22 rimfires. I was going to work on the trigger anyway so it wasn't too big of a deal when I found out which was right after I bought it. The first two times I squeezed the trigger I was pressing so hard I had to stop without firing to see if the safety was on (which it wasn't). (I had to look the second time as I had switched the safety on and off a few times after the first shot.) I've got a few .22lr 10/22s and none were anywhere near as bad out of the box. Note : some .22 rimfires are okay to dry fire and I find the 10/22s are one of them.

Now, having sworn off of Rugers due to the magazine capacity deal, I would suggest Anschütz if you'll also consider bolt actions. The all German ones will outshoot the 10/22 out of the box by a wide margin. 1451s are a good starting point and the slightly used (looks new) one I got was only $250. For the price of a 10/22 decked out with the necessary aftermarket parts to get it to a minimum level of accuracy and improved function you can get a higher quality Anschütz and still be more accurate.

Just a plug for Anschütz. :)

I'm sure you'll get a 10/22lr. Have fun and customize. That's the real beauty of the 10/22.

Just get you a run of the mill 10/22 in .22LR. You can customize that rifle out the wazoo! Mine is stainless (aluminum). I put an Adams & Bennet heavy bbl (stainless) on it, dropped a Volquartsen match hammer in it (greatly reduced the trigger pull), got one of the stock Ruger laminate heaby bbl stocks, and rigged the bolt release so all I have to do is yank back the handle and it closes. Got a lot of 10 round mags. Some higher cap mags are still available. Got a nice base, some Millet rings and put my old 3-9x40 on it.

The accuracy isn't where I'd like it to be quite yet. It likes Federal lightening ammo. It likes the high velocity, but doesn't cycle well with standard. I need to bore the stock a little to float the bbl, and see if that helps.

I want to get another one and rig it up with some good open sights... or maybe get a nice bolt for silhouette competition...

Good luck on your search!
