ruger 10/22 problem

i was shooting my 10/22 last week when something strange happened. it stopped firing! I wasnt out of ammo, so i dropped the mag, locked the bolt open and cleared the chamber. i found the small hook-like thing as well as the small spring that are attached to the side of the bolt (im guessing this is the extractor?) took it home disassembled and was able to put all the pieces back together. everything functions as it should. my question is what couldve caused the extractor to jump out like that?

A .22 will function for a while without an extractor. I broke one on a MKII and it would go for about 300 to 400 rounds before FTE problems cropped up. A good cleaning and it was up for another 300 to 400 rounds. I called Ruger to order the replacement extractor, spring, and plunger and they sent them to me for free. This was about 10 or so years ago.

It's more or less correct. The 10/22 is direct blowback operated. The gas from firing blows the case out of the chamber. The extractor is mostly there to guide the operation, and keep the case oriented so that the ejector consistently kicks the case out of the action. Without that guidance from the extractor, the case might move before hitting the ejector, and not kick out of the ejection port correctly.

as an appleseed instructor, I see extractor failures all the time. It usually happens when a student lets the bolt slam closed on a chamber flag, or some other obstruction (empty casing, or pocket knife blade) in the reciever

Poodleshooter has it. Ejection is weaker and more erratic, but it works fine. The extractor doesn't really extract the case from the chamber, blowback pressure does. When the chamber got really dirty, it would start leaving cases in the chamber every once in a while. Of course, manually clearing the chamber is a bit tough with no extractor.

I don't think an no extractor would leave quite the mess as having no valve covers.:p

knife blades in chambers are common. They are usually inserted into the reciever after a failure to extract, the the bolt slams forward on it causing the extractor to be extracted
