I bought a Ruger #1 International in 30-06 and gave it to my son .
He will be using it on a hunt soon . This is an older rifle and I need to check the butt stock for tight . Being a International does it have the stock bolt under the recoil pad . Also how sight it just right ?

Yes all Ruger #1s have a stock bolt that is accessed from the rear. You remove one buttpad screw and loosen the other and swivel the pad out of the way. You can then see the hole that contains the stock bolt.
I don't have a spec for torque. I take them as tight as I can with my hand.
It had always worked ok for me.

Do not use a power drill or driver, use a long screwdriver and hand turn to tight. Don't reef on it, just turn to tight.

The sights should be good unless damaged. The front sight should be firmly in place, no wobble or looseness. The rear sight should be the same, up or down. The sights are designed for 100 yard zero. Get a drop table for your hunting load and see what your aim point should be for 50 and 200 yards. Beyond that, a scope is needed for humane kills.

If you've got a scope mounted, you zero as with any rifle.
