Ruger #1 and scopes

i purchased a ruger #1 7MM STW in SS a few weeks ago and mounted a weaver grand slam 4.5 X 14 in the factory mounts.
the scope is backed up all the way to the adjustment turret and cannot go any further towards the eye w/o changing to an extended scope ring. the stock is waaaayyyy to long for me and a few freinds that have handled it. i am only 5-6" so i am having the stock shortened and a decelarator recoil pad put on.
is this eye relief distance a common thing w/ rugers?
i like the rifle but if you put a scope on it too far back your going to have a rough time loading it.
also does any one know if ruger sells just actions.
i want an international in .308 or 35 whelen and i dont want to buy the whole rifle and then replace the BBL.

The stock may well be too long as well the scope mounts are further forward on the #1 than on a bolt action. I use a Leupold 1.5x-5x Vari-XIII on mine and it has a very long eye relief at 1.5x. Extended scope rings also help but they are not that easy to find. My scope was far enough back that I could see properly at all power levels and it did not interfere with loading. YMMV.

XX. The trick to loading a #1 is to drop the muzzle and let the round slide in. You can even do it without looking at the breech with practice. helps a lot when shooting at game.
Basically, you lower the muzzle. The left hand (assuming you are right handed) slides up to the breech, with the thumb covering the entrance over the breech block. The right hand brings the cartridge to the thumb of the left hand, which moves out of the way as the right hand drops the round into the breech. Use only factory ammo, or reloads that are full length resized, and they should drop in with no problem. I know this sounds complicated, but it would be easier if I could show you in person.
For what it's worth, I load, care for, feed and hunt with nine different Ruger #1's. Bought the first one in 1970.

i love mine even though it kicks like a mad mule on pcp.
i want a full stocked international in 35 whelen or .308 but i 'll probably have to settle for a 30-06. i want to have a scout rail instaled and top it w/ an M* 2.5X leupold scout scope.
