Rounds jam

Have a Remington 7400 30-06 semi auto that jams about every 2nd round.
When fired, the bolt starts to load the shell but then rides up on the base of the case about 1/2" forcing the point of the bullet up into the top of the chamber where it jams. Mag spring is good and action is clean ---any ideas?
 
It sounds like there is not enough gas to fully operate the action. The gas port or gas jet could be partly clogged, or the ammunition might not be powerful enough. The latter condition can happen with some factory ammo but usually is due to reloads.

That could very well be the problem---my attention was more towards the buffer end and wasn't letting the bolt cycle 100% as though there was some kind of debrie or other kind of grime preventing it from doing so. Sort of like a dirty AR. I guess some things can be staring you right in the face and you don't see them because you're look'in to hard---I'll check that out and see if I get a cure---THANKS JIM
 
I would first take off the forend and look at the action spring assembly. Is it rusty or nasty? What does it look like inside the receiver. Is it nasty? What does the chamber look like? These rifles will not function properly with a rusty chamber. Sometimes the scope base screws will be just a little to long. The rifle will function fine when you work the action by hand but not when shot. Take the trigger group out. Look down into the receiver at the scope base screws. Do they appear shiny or battered? You can see the rear screws with the trigger group out. You will have to pull the bolt back to see the front screws. If the screws are shiny and battered looking that is your problem. Take them out and shorten them until they are flush with receiver. If all of this is fine try a new magazine. I am assuming you are not shooting reloaded ammo.
 
Well guys--turns out it was bad remington ammo---got some standard Winchester ammo and ran 50 rounds throught her without a problem. Then I put 4 rounds of my bubbys Remington Cor-Lok ( Different box from a different store miles away ) in the clip ---fired, and the sucker jammed in the breech. Fired another 20 of Federal with no problem. How about that---Remington ammo that won't work in a Remington rifle. Anyway thanks for the help
 
Unlike Military loads, most commercial loads are assembled a healthy margin down below SAMMI maximum chamber pressures to be safe in older or poorly cared for guns. Remington seems to have the biggest margin. You could blindfold me and load Remington and Winchester .45-70 in my Marlin 1895 in any order, and I would be able to tell you easily from the recoil which was which. The Remington is far milder. It must be loaded down near trapdoor Springfield pressures (though please don't try it in one based on this guess).

You get Remington 22lr. ammo and shoot it through a 10/22 and notice the difference in the report - i USE wINCHESTER!

(You might check the chamber on that rifle - lots of guys carry ammo in a shirt pocket - it gets sweaty and in the rifle causes a fine red rust in a chamber.)
