Round jammed in my HK barrel?

Just went out to shoot my new USP 9 fullsize for the first time yesterday. Conditions were VERY cold(in mid-Michigan)but the gun seemed to work ok. Great accuracy! :) I had a couple of FTF's(mostly just an ejection problem and a stovepipe) that I attributed to the gun getting worn in and the cold. Shot about 300 rds through it. One enormous problem is that I got my last round of the day(it wouldn't have been given the choice) jammed in the barrel! I was using some cheap and very dirty Russian ammo, a few Blazers, and a few Federals. I tried to dislodge the obstruction in the field but to no avail. I finally got it out by pounding(very, very, carefully) a philips-head screwdriver through the barrel with a hammer. The round was stuck about 1 inch down the barrel from the bore. The only way I noticed it was that rounds from the mag wouldn't feed. The round that got stuck was one of the Russian ones. Now, was this a problem with the gun, the ammo, or the conditions? The barrel seems no worse for wear now upon close inspection. Anybody have this problem before? What were you shooting, ammo& gun model?

I have never seen nor heard of any similar problem with a USP. Either there is a major flaw in the barrel itself or that ammo is way out of spec.

I suggest you stay away from that Russian ammo, in any claiber. It's not worth your gun is it?

Sounds like you had a squib.its most likey an ammo problem, and if I were you, I'd cease firing that cheap russian ammo. I've never had a squib, but a friend of mine did. He wasnt paying attention while reloading (!) and forgot to put gunpowder in the case! We used a wood dowel and got it out the same way. Did the report of the squib sound light or diferent? It should have. If you would have been able to fire another round after the squib was jammed in the bbl, you could be out an HK and a hand. Incidentally, if that russian ammo is corrosive, make sure you clean the weapon RIGHT AWAY.

I'll make damn sure that I stay away from the Russian stuff! My buddy bought it and we were trying to use the last of it up. we just bought a 1000rds. of Federal and we'll stick to ammo that's more reputable from now on! I painstakingly cleaned the gun less that 4 hours after the incident. Thanks for your posts.

Looks like youve got your answer here but I have to agree it sounds like a squib load. I got a 124 gr hollow point stuck in my GP100 that way once, It was fairly easy to remove with a brass punch and hammer and doesn't seem to have affected the gun in a negative way since so you should be allright.

You are a far braver man than I. I would've left this task for an armorer. I hope you didn't do any damage to the barrel rifling.

I've said it before only to get jeered at, but I'll take another chance. STAY away from Russian ammo. It's nothing but heart ache. Good ammo at almost the same cost can be had from IMI and Sellier & Belliot.

A long time ago (when I was an enlisted canoneer) I had a "sticker" with charge 2 green bag. The artillery TM stated elevate to max possibly quadrant and fire the highest charge avaliable with that projo.

That Russian stuff is bad news. They have finally given the stuff a name other than just "ammo". The trade name is Wolf. Same exact POS that used to come in the white box.
Stay away from it!!! :)

If I am not mistaken, HK actually fired a 9mm round through a test pistol for the Bundeswehr of Deutschland that had a bullet already lodged in it and no adverse effects occured. I read this in an HK display case at a Gun Shop.

I'm sorry this happened to you and in the meantime, we should put out the Brazos on this cheap Russian ammo. I personally don't care for Sellier and Bellot since it caused me to have some factory work done on a Kahr K9. The recent fodder from Blazer is inexpensive and clean.

I've personally seen a HK USP40 that had a squib, round stuck in the barrel about 1/4 of the way through, and had then had another round fired after it. The barrel was bulged, and the guy said he had a hard time field stripping it, but no other damage. I went out and bought one the next week!

I would switch to Blazer, too. Shoots clean in all my guns! Even though I reload, I shoot the Blazer all the time. Works good for me.

H & Ks are tough. Their advertising tells of how they purposefully jammed a round in the barrel, fired another behind it. Cleared everything out and the gun still shot a 2.5" group. Anyway, it sounds like bad ammo caused your problem. Ditto the others remarks.

My recollection of the HK literature mirrors the second acount in this thread ... that the barrel bulged, but that there was no loss of accuracy ... about the most you can ask for is that your weapon protects you ... just one more reason buy quality. As for ammo recommendations, I picked up a case of Fiocchi .40S&W 145 gr. JHP for just under $200 delivered from Bulkammo.com ... looks like the price has gone up a tad, but much better than the misfire headaches
