Saw one at an LPS for $899,
frame & slide were of yellowed aluminium...grime was thick...
grips were badly cracked and finish was mostly gone...
barrel looked ok, and it was a 9mm version...
but it just looked like it had been found in a leaky barn...

So...any reason to go back and haggle 'em down another $200??

Or should I just let some other schmoe get it & clean it up?

I have shot a 9mm Commander (all steel, not alloy) and it was about the sweetest 1911 I've ever fired. I'd love to have the one you saw, but the price is significantly too high. Colt just reintroduced the 9mm Commander, and the MSRP for a new one is $926, which means the street price is likely to be almost even with the one you're looking at.

By all means, try to bargain him down at LEAST $200.

I did in fact buy a brand new one for $6.00 more than that. In the condition that you stated, they would have to come WAYYYYY down from there. WAY WAY WAY down from there.

It better be Hitler's gun, or Nixon's, for that price.

Okay,

Now let me put out this disclaimer...

This is Kimber and not a Colt. It is aluminum, it is 9mm, it is 4" instead of the regular commander size. It was purchased used. I paid $599.00 for it.

So, I think even for a "true" Colt Lightweight Commander in the condition as described (even less $200.00 if you can talk him down) it is too expensive. There are other guns, including Colt 9mm Lightweight Commanders, out there.

Now, when I was looking for this one (I originally wanted a 45ACP commander size, and still do) I looked at the Ruger CMD size and was on my way to purchase one of those that I found for $799.00 (not a screaming deal, but I do want on badly)

So, be patient, spend some time looking around - you can do much better than that.

IMHO.

P.S.

I'm a firm believer in project guns, this seems too expensive for even a project gun.

P.P.S.

I could not agree more. I was so surprised at how WONDERFUL this gun shoots. It is amazing! I've been a gun nut for over 40 years and it is a keeper. The 9mm - 1911 platform is the bee's knees!
