Rotating Barrel / Explanation?

Stretch

Browning-type mechanisms are simple and easy to understand, perhaps the simplicity is what makes them so amazing. In contrast to a browning type, can someone explain how a rotating barrel system works(a la Beretta); and what the advantages/disadvantages of the two systems are?

the short version?

in short recoil operation in a pistol locks the slide to the barrel....

the browning cams the bbl up & down into recesses in the slide

the rotating barrel twists a lug into recesses into the slide

its the same thing - just slightly different

rotating the barrel is nothing new - dating back to the 1900's..... just different

Doesn't everything date back to the 1900's? I mean, geez, it's only March of 2000. Not much new produced yet!

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Hi, guys,

Pretty far back in the 20th century. Browning patented a turning barrel pistol around 1899 and the Roth-Steyr was adopted by the Austro-Hungarian cavalry in 1907. The later Steyr Hahn (hammer) was adopted by Austria in 1911 and is still liked by some shooters.

There were many other turning barrel systems, not even mentioning (I prefer not to) the infamous Colt 2000 All-American.
