The quality of the Rossis seem to vary from gun to gun. I've seen several that should never have left the factory (due to poor quality and fitting), and others that were truly outstanding.

I had a Rossi 877 (.357 with 2 1/2" barrel.) Had 'smith smooth the trigger and put in S&W springs, and it was very accurate. I eventually found, however, that I'm not worth a damn with a short-barreled revolver (or, more correctly, was unwilling to go to the time and effort it would take to become worth a damn with a short-barreled revolver -- when I had other guns that I shot quite well.)

If you can check one out thoroughly for fit, feel and finish before you buy (i.e., not getting it by long-distance sale), you might find that you've got a good gun.

But, quite frankly, I think you'd be better off buying a used S&W revolver... better quality, better resale value, and better shooting.

Rossi revolvers internally are just like a Smith $ Wesson and their quality has improved greatly in the past 10 years. I would just as soon have a Rossi stainless 5 shot snub revolver as a Model 60 for my own use. Lot cheaper and just as relaible.

I owned a Rossi 971 Stainless .357magnum with a 2.5" barrel for the better part of two years. It came factory equipped with a flash suppressor on the end. It was a great looking gun with an even better feeling grip on it. The gun handled no less than 500 rounds of hot ammo without loosening up.

The problem with the gun was that I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with it. No matter how much I adjusted the sights, I could never, ever get the darn thing sighted in. It had very little accuracy at any distance.

I traded it in on a used Ruger GP-100 4" stainless, fully lugged, .357. That Ruger is the finest revolver I've ever shot (with the exception of a Colt Python). I like it more than the S&W 686 or the Taurus...

All it cost me was two years of frustration trying to get the Rossi to shoot straight, the price of 500 rounds of ammo, and the $100 difference I had to pay to buy the Ruger.

Don't waste your time, go straight to a good gun.

Rossi QC varies. They are improving and are generally better than they were a while back. If you know what you are doing, a full checkout (2-3 minutes, a few more with a range rod) can get you a good one or let you pass on a not so good one. I would not buy sight unseen.

I have owned a Rossi M971, 2.5 inch barrel, unfluted cylinder, rubber grips for about 7 years. In fact it was my very first handgun. I have had nothing but good, reliable service from it in all that time. It seems to be the gun I reach for more often thatn not.

I also own a SIG 226, Ruger GP-100, Taurus M85, and a Bersa Series 95. In all those weapons, I still fel confident enough to reash for the old Rossi to take on the road when going to a not so nice part of town.

Hope this helps!!!

If I am not mistaken, Rossi is now owned by Taurus. Taurus has really turned their reputation around concerning Quality Control; they are now considered to be on par with the rest of the industry. If I were looking for a new revolver, I would definetly look at both, the price is right.

For instance, a large SW Pa. dealer is currently selling new blue Model 85 Taurus revolvers for $219.95, & the Ultra Lite for $229.95 (these are .38 Special). A Model 605 in blue is selling for $224.95, SS is $274.95 (these are .357Mag).

Rossi makes a nice gun now, but I had an older one (40+ years...) That I wore out the spocket that rotates the cylinder.
They have all new equipment now, and make a very nice revolver.
