Rossi Piece of Junk

A while back I criticised Rossi's as being junk. My apologies! Well, temporary at least until I get to shoot this thing. I picked it up this morning for under $200. I figured I can't go wrong. The former owner didn't know the barrel should be cleaned once in a while!!!

The only problem I can find with it is it only ejects 4 out of 6 shells. But here tis. Hope I can get to shoot it in another day or so...

Nice find. Did it come with the red dot? I used to have a 2" Rossi snub nose and it was a pretty good revolver. I regret selling it.

Had a Rossi .357 with 8 " barrel, would fire 3 shots and the cyl would lock up.
You could see that the cyl was crooked, Cleaned it all up nice and shiney, sent it to Rossi, they fire it sent it back filthy and said nothing was wrong.....took it out fired 3 shots, same thing Cyl stuck....got my money back from dealer and WIL NOT EVER OWN ANOTHER ROSSI , and can not recomend one to anyone.

Had an older (i.e., not Braztech/Taurus) Rossi 971 Stainless 4" .357 and it was fine in all regards. They've resurrected the model but the only way to get stainless now is 6" (972).

Ooops

Anyone coming on this thread would you please take a look at the third pic from the top, and tell me why I didn't notice this at the shop. The cyclinder is fully open, and note the flange is blocking at least one shell from ejecting.

I also noticed the cyclinder doesn't lock up very tight. I took the cyclinder out to clean and inspect. Maybe there's a trick to reassemble. Looking at pic #2, it is flush, so maybe I'll have to withdraw my apology and take the gun back tomorrow or the day after...

RevolverLover, It did come with the red dot...

I doesn't appear to have been used very much. Maybe the cylinder locked up on the former owner, and he didn't tell the dealer...??? Go figure...

of course it aleays goes this way, I swore to never own another Rossi, I was just offered one in a trade that I really can not turn down, but this one is used and functions fine........
goes to show...Never say NEVER

I shot a snub nose 38 Rossi one time. The gun shot really well. It was an older gun. BUT I don't think I'm going to go out and buy a Rossi anytime soon. Most of the time when I'm in the hunt for a revolver I can find good used Smiths at a pretty good price.

Seems like a good deal to me. I would guess that you could get it fixed and still have a good deal. Keep us posted. :)

Bullrock, I see that often in Rossi revolvers. I have dummy rounds to test in the shop with. I tossed 6 in a Rossi unfluted 357 Magnum and the flange blocked the ejector. Another problem I have experienced too often with Rossi revolvers is cases slipping under the star on extraction. Rossi uses soft springs and they don't endure for long. I have picked up frozen actions NIB in shops. I have also had cylinders overindex and the firing pin hit the cylinder instead of the primer. Recoil can cause their weak bolt springs to release the cylinder. I have written Rossi off. Taurus revolvers have been great. I have seen several dogs lately. Rossi made a good M10 knock off several years ago and they went down after they started their modernization. The steel Rossi 38s were decent. I have owned Rossi rifles, revolvers and shotguns. Their shotguns are fine.

I own two Rossi's...

A model 68 and a Model 88. I have carried the 88 as a back-up weapon on duty for about eight years. I have qualified with it twice a year for eight years. I shoot it around the house sometimes for fun. It is deadly accurate, shoots to point of aim and I have never had it malfuction. I liked it so much I saw the model 68 used very little in a gun shop for $125 and I bought it. I think it is as good as a Smith and better than a Taurus, at least the newest taurus revolvers. I like the grip better than either.

Sir Will

I took it back to the dealer today. I'm a good customer, and they gave me a full credit towards the New Vaquero I ordered a month ago...If they can ever find one in SS... :)

Rossi's Junk?

Not at all, pard'ner! :D

FWIW, they've come a long way since their introduction here in the states.

Best Wishes,

Only experience with a Rossi was in the early '90's----what a POS.

With all the years messing with guns---the only revolvers that get my attention anymore are Smiths and Rugers---the rest are junk(South American)----or way overpriced for what you get(Colt--Freedom Arms).

Hey Dan

Yours may be fine, but I've had two in the last 5 years, and both of them were junk. Next time I see Rossi printed on a gun, I plan to look the other way.

The bright side is, I only lost the sales tax on the transaction, and that is a small price to pay for another lesson in quality... :)

Omaha-BeenGlockin, I pretty much agree with that...Even Tauri are OK, but my SW625, SW629, SW66, SW M292, Ruger GP-100 and Ruger Vaquero are quality. I can see it in the eye, and feel it in the grip.

Oh, one exception...I have a Beretta Stampede that is one terrific gun... :D

Bullrock, maybe that's why most of the new Rossi 92 levers don't say Rossi on them any more! - but that of their distributor: Navy Arms, EMF, LSI, etc.! These carbines I've had were otheriwise nice guns. I've heard mixed on the revolvers - my older (now gone) stainless 4" 971 .357 was fine.
