Rossi matched pair--anyone owned one?

I'm shopping around for a cheap starter shotgun for a family member. He went with me to the last local TFL shoot and is currently in the "convince your wife" process before obtaining his first firearm. He really liked my 12 ga. but his $$ is low.

These shotgun/.22 combos seem like a steal. I think they would be perfect for him. Does anyone have any feedback on these? Problems? Price quotes?

I've seen a couple prices from local stores for about $130. Is it really that cheap?

If I strike out in the reply dept. in the next couple days, will some kindly mod. move this to Art of the Rifle?

These are based on the older H&R Topper, which in turn is based on older H&R combo guns.

All of these are durable, inexpensive, and simple to operate. As starter guns, they have a lot to offer,BUT....

Once a shooter is past bare minimum, these tend to waste away in closets while the newer repeaters etc, get taken out and used. There's very little resale value.

Also, recoil in those single shot 12s is quite substantial. Son's NEF (More or less samesame) ran 5 lbs, 9 oz, and would be a vicious kicker with anything but a very light load. Heavy kicking shotguns are NOT good ones for tyros. Light shotguns, including this one,are fast flinch builders. Been there done that, first shotgun I had was a 16 gauge H&R with a stock crooked as Clinton's lawyer. It killed at one end and crippled at the other.I had a flinch by my 16th birthday that took a coupla decades to lose.

Currently, Son's 12 gauge takes 3/4 oz reloads of mild recoil. I doubt you'r family member would be willing to roll his own for a similar load.

For $130, he can get a decent 22 or a decent 12 gauge pump. A used 870 may even be found if you run across a police turnin for close to that.

HTH....

Goet, for police trade in shotguns, try the FARM (police supply store) on 5300 south and something. East of the Freeway, north of that big black glass building. Sorry I don't know the adderss.

Trade in 870s and S&W 3000s last time I was there for $180 out the door. With lots of extra goodies (extensions, slings, etc).

And I will second what Dave says. Jay has a NEF 12 gauge. It has some thump to it. I don't mind it too much, but probably not the best weapon for somebody just starting out.

Added to all of this is the fact that the .410 is not a beginner's shotgun. I would have become a better shooter and not so much of a vulgarian if I would have started wingshooting with something other than a .410.

K. Thanks.

Correia, I remember that little single shot toy that Jay brought out last year.

Oh, well. We'll see what kinda trade ins we can find.

I have always liked that little combo gun. Acadamy had them for $110. It would make a nice squirl gun.:D
