Considering a rossi 45-70 lever action as my next purchase. I have 2 buddies that own the rossi 92 and i love shooting them but i dont want to go and buy the same rifle. Im a recoil junkie and love the large, loud calibers. I know nothing about lever actions as i have never bought one. I was hoping to get some pros and cons regarding this rifle and maybe some first hand experience from someone who owns one. I do reload so ammo availability and.cost will not be an issue for me.

Here is the link to what im considering...

My dad had one, great gun. But in real cold conditions it would not cycle. Turns out the clearances were too tight, had to get sent back. Worked fine afterward.

I have one. It's a great gun ,but only after I went through it internally. They are well known for poor machining on the internal parts. The guys at Rossi Rifleman call them kit guns , with you being the final finisher. You may get lucky and not have to do anything to a new one, but I would plan on polishing and working on some of the parts before it feeds and fires correctly.
They are worth the effort if your handy at such things.

I've gone the 45-70 route years ago. Don't want to go there again, but if I wanted a 45-70 I'd be looking at the Marlins. Even with their current issues they have to be better quality than the Rossi's I've seen. And there is always the option of buying a used Marlin. The Winchester re-productions are nice too, but much more expensive than I'm willing to pay.

If you like recoil you'll love the 45-70. I don't care much for recoil. Restocked my old Remington 30-06 because it didn't have a recoil pad and kicked like a mule. Or so I thought until I got my Marlin 45-70. Funny thing is I love shooting it. I don't know anything about the Rossie but the only thing I didn't like about the Marlin was the trigger. I replaced it and absolutely love the little rifle now. If you like recoil you can load the Marlin up and have a real kick. Pun intended. :D

Yea, im familiar with the "rossi work". Hahaha. Had to order a dvd and do some modifications to a rossi 92 but when it was done it cycled like a champ! Smooth and flawless. Shoots pretty darn good too. I did see the marlins, i was leaning toward the rossi simply because i liked the stainless look against the wood stock. How is the recoil on the 45-70? Someone told me its a slowr velocity round but will def punch a heck of a hole. Im assuming if i were to reload i could run smaller bullets, bigger charge, more velocity. Id like to be able to hit steel at 150yrds.

The Rossi .45-70 is light, I have a NEF .45-70 and I believe the Rossi is a bit lighter. .45-70 does kick quite a bit, but nothing too dramatic, about like magnum 12 gauge. If your goal is 150 yards, you can do that with regular factory rounds. But I'm sure reloading would be much cheaper.
