Rosewood grips and Hoppes No 9

I have probably screwed up (again.) My wife purchased a used S&W model 21 44 special with rosewood grips. The beautiful piece needed to be cleaned and so I scrubbed the bore and the cylinder with Hoppes No 9. The rosewood grips are now kind of sticky. I did not cover the wood...Should I have? Or even reomved the grips?

And if i messed them up, can they be salvaged without totally refinishing them? I don't want her to use the thing on ME! :o

You should remove and grips that my have a protective coating on them before cleaning the gun with any solvent. You might want to take a thinner and wipe the remaining finish off the grips and re-coat them with a nice poly.

Thanks, Playboy. Well, I have cleaned many a wooden stocked long gun with no damage to finish. Guess i need to research before grabbing the cleaner. I appreciate your help...this forum is great.
