Romanian SKS's?

Just picked up a Romanian SKS (circa 1957) over the weekend at a local gun show. I could have paid $100 more at the same gun show and gotten a nearly mint Russian SKS (circa 1952).

I went with the Romanian because I was looking for a shooter (Romanian), and not a collector's piece (Russian). Plus, with the $100 I saved I was also able to buy a synthetic stock, a handful of stripper clips, an extra complete bolt, a carry strap, and a replacement bolt return spring.

I'm happy with my purchase, but I was just curious on how the Romanians compare with the Russian SKS's. The fit and finish seems a step down from the Russian, but I am more interested in anyone's experience with actual performance of the Romanian version vs. the Russian version. Any thought would be appreciated. Thanks.

I usually shoot about 5" groups with my Russian SKS and about 6" groups with the Romanian. But both guns are capable of better - my eyes have a tough time with blade sights and 100 yd targets.

My Romanian has a loose stock. The metal part (action, barrel, trigger, etc) moves forward and back about 1/8 inch in the stock. I don't know if this imacts the accuracy. Maybe I'll try to figure out how to tighten it up.

So, not much difference in shooting between the two.

I doubt if you needed the extra bolt and spring. You'll probably never break the originals.

The only customization I've been thinking of is some way to mount a peep sight on the rear end of the Romanian's receiver cover, because I like peep sights and it would increase the sight radius. I'd need a new receiver cover so I don't mess up the original one.

Regards.

According to what the BATF told me Romainian SKS rifles are C&R which means when you put that synthetic stock on there you have to take off the bayonet. Because you have just reclasified the weapon.

Sleeping Dog, I've been seeing SKS receiver covers in Shotgun News for just a few dollars. Check it out, and I'm sure you'll find something. Hell, I've been seeing SKS receiver covers with ring mounts and a 4X scope for just $25. Good luck.

Conformer, thanks for the info. I'm already on it. Took the bayonet off before I put the receiver/barrel group into the new stock.

SKS play in action

Hey , i have a Chinese SKS that was in a synth. stock when i bought it and had about the same amount of play (1/8"). It shot the same size groups after i installed a new stock on it with no play in the action. You could always shim the asssembly in so that the play is gone.

My milled Chinese is good for 3-4 groups even with my shakey hands and poor eyesight.
I have heard they can be quite accurate, but haven't yet seen it happen. :D

Every Roumanina SKS that I have seen has looked like it has been dragged behind a pickup truck down a long gravel road. The stocks are all dinged and banged up. For far less money I have rather have a pristine Norinco. One of our local Pawn Shops has a Roumanin in their inventory right now and it looks like hell and they want $189.00 for it. I just bought a beauitful Norinco SKS from them for $100.00 out the door and it had the original blade bayonet, butt stock cleaning kit and sling and wasn't all beat up like the Roumanins that I have seen.
