I'm considering purchasing one of the Surplus Romanian SKS rifles with a C&R. I've seen several ads in SGN for $160. Has anyone tried one of these? What condition are they in? Any info is appreciated! Thanks!

Conan, I have two of them. I have an original Russian and a Romainian I bought from SOG in Ohio. The Romainians were issued rifles so they are going to show some wear and tear. When I bought mine I ordered it hand select and got two of them keeping the best one. They are good shooters and fun rifles to shoot. I enjoy mine. Ammo is cheap and easy to come by. If you are thinking about getting one,do so I don't think you will regret it :)

Hope this helps :)
Happy Shooting :)

OK. Here is what I have learned recently. I have a C&R license and I recently bought a "collector's grade" Romanian SKS from a company that will remain nameless. It was advertised as having matching numbers and no cracks in the stock. Guess what? The stock was a pile of splinters when I received the gun. I called the company I purchased it from and got the song and dance routine and it being damaged in shipping. This is where it gets interesting. The tag on the gun had the letters GC at the end of the stock number. There is basically one company that imports the majority of the surplus firearms that are on the market. The tag on my SKS was the one that the importer had placed on it. The GC stood for "good cracked". Be careful about buying something that you can't look at firsthand. There are company's that buy from this importer and represent the firearm as being something that it isn't.

Just for the record, Everything that I have purchased so far from SOG in Ohio has been exactly as advertised.I have been pleased with everything I have gotten from them and they could not have been more helpful over the phone with any questions that I have had for them. :) Just for the record ;)

I am a little late, I just ran across this thread. I recently bought a Romanian SKS from AIMSurplus. It was in very used condition. It was $139.95.
After looking it over in their store, I took it home. Since I have been hanging around TFL for a while now, I knew some of the things to look for.
I went to the ak-47 page and copied their disassembly instructions. Very easy to do!
I found that the firing pin and bolt were very dirty, so I took them apart and cleaned them real well. Only one pin to remove and it's apart. What surprised me was when I took the gas tube off the gun. The piston was frozen inside the tube and the gas port was plugged solid!! With some gentle tapping on the small end, I got it to come out. Inspecting the piston showed some erosion around the end. I cleaned out the tube with a brass brush for my .50 cal. muzzleloader. After a thorough cleaning of the entire gun, I was a little unsure of how it would work.
I got to take it out a few days later and was pleasantly surprised to find that it worked flawlessly! My GF and I put about 120 rounds of German surplus rounds thru it and found it very fun to shoot!
As others have posted here before, make sure the firing pin and bolt assembly are kept clean. I will also recommend cleaning the gas tube and piston regularly.
I am anxious to take it out again!
