Romanian AK anybody got one?

I have been looking with interest at the ads for Romanian AK 47's in Shot Gun News. I see that Southern Ohio guns has 7.62X39 or .223 or the newer 5.6 Russian Romanian AK 47's in "excellent" condition for $280.00. Included is one ten round mag and a 30 round standard mag.
I have some SKS's stashed and some that I shoot regularly but as of yet I have not gotten on the AK bandwagon. My questions is do any of you guys/gals have one of these? Are they of reasonable quality? The price seems right. I am thinking that this cheap supply will burn up before long due to restriction on imports ect.
What do you think. Thanks

I have a romak SAR-1. Its pretty good. I bought it new with a 10rd and a 30rd and cleaning kit. I have put about 400 rounds through it and hasnt given me a problem yet. I recomend one. Its really fun for taking in the desert and messing with. Although i prefer my Bushy AR :) But check out gunbroker.com and look for one. Just make sure you get a manual on how to clean it because i didnt get one with mine and it was a pain the first time.

I have a SAR 1(7.62) and a SAR 2(5.45). I love them both. The finish is a little rough, but they shoot like gangbusters. One concern with the SAR series is canted gas blocks and/or canted front sight bases. Another problem that arose in guns of 1999 manufacture is deficient US firecontrol parts(specifically soft hammers). If you can find one for sale that you can examine first, that would be my suggestion(although you won't know if you have a soft hammer until you actually shoot one a bit-the hammer will show noticible "denting". A final potential problem is trigger slap. I have not experienced this personally, but it is an easy fix. I bought mine from a local dealer, and had to pay dealer mark-up above the prices in Shotgun news, but for me it was worth it to verify my gun was straight. Generally, if the SAR is a 2000 model year gun, you shouldn't encouter these problems.

For the price, they are hard to beat. If you like to tinker/customize/accessorize your rifles, then these will definately appeal to you. For mor information, check out AK47.net. Go to the forums and check out the Romanian section.

I've got a SAR-1 that I ordered from AIM Surplus (www.aimsurplus.com). Great people at AIM.

I love my SAR. The U.S. made parts are rumored to be soft, but you can buy the original Romanian parts that were taken off the guns from Century Arms for $10. That included all the trigger components, the gas piston, and the grip.

My SAR is not a pretty gun. It won't win any beauty pagents. My Romanian SKS is much nicer quality, in my opinion. My Mausers are much better built weapons. My SAR isn't the most accurate gun in my collection, either. However, it is probably my favorite rifle to play with. What does that tell you? I'd get one. It's exactly what an AK is supposed to be: rough but reliable.

I have a SAR-1 and love it. I was lucky enough to find one that has all matching wood. I have fired over 2K rounds so far without a single failure. I still have the U.S trigger parts and they work fine (no-slap). The supply is dry'n up, I would suggest that you buy one soon.

SAR-1 100yards/Bench/Wolf ammo= 3.5" group all day long.

i went and did the reading suggested then ordered one. what the heck. for that price i can afford to tinker. if they are half as tough as most AK's and have a chrome lined barrel it will be worth the money. plus the $8.00 to $10.00 30 round mags AND DIRT CHEAP AMMO won't hurt my feelings either.

can't wait
ROCK ON!!!!!!

I have the SAR-1 and love it. Ammo is cheap, high cap mags are cheap and it is just a blast to shoot. People at the range may frown at it until you let them shoot it a couple of times, then they want to know where to buy one and how much is it going to cost.

I had a couple of Romanian AK, the type with the FPK style thumbhole stock. I believe they were called "Romak 1"s.

As compared to my Chinese MAK-90, they had a better finish and didn't have the odd cut at the rear of the receiver. I preferred the Romak's ribbed dust cover, but I like the MAK's longer mag release paddle.

I don't know if it is the single hook trigger or the non-springloaded firing pin, but my Romak, and one that belongs to my buddy, would periodically burst fire (2-3rnds). This wasn't something I could duplicate, so it was just a scary thing that happened once or twice the entire time I owned it.

Make sure this isn't a US-made receiver with a Romanian parts kit, particularly if the receiver was made by Hesse. If it's all Romanian, buy it, permenantly install a US-made AK-74 muzzle brake on it and have a ton of fun.

I have a Century SAR-2. Great shooter right out of the box. Little or no recoil. Cheap ammo. And alot more accurate than I had expected. I paid way more than I should have ($425), but there's no such thing as a good deal in a gun shop in Maryland.
