Rock River Arms AR-15

I have conducted a search, but could not find a specific answer to the following question. What are your experiences with Rock River Arms AR-15's? I spoke to a man today who had recently purchased a pre-ban ar-15 with collapsible stock for 700.00 It looked great, but that seemed like a deal that was too good to be true.

Are you sure it's not a fake folder? $700 is about the price of their new guns. If someone has a real folder for $700, either they got the deal of the century or they were sold 5-10 years in federal prison.:(

They've only been producing under the name 'rock river arms' since 1997. Ergo, there's no pre-bans. Any folder would have to be LEO only.

I dont see what the big deal about a collapsible stock would be if you put one on an AR, if you didnt go out announcing it and didnt do anything stupid with it, what would it matter? Also I have a hard time believing someone would get hammered for 5 to 10 when dopers, child molesters, and murderers all get less time than that on average. Prisons are crowded enough do they have room for people who put telescoping stocks on a gun? Seriously folks. I think the ATF and the like have better things to do with their time than to chase folding stocks down.

I got one (20" A2) about 3 months ago. Oh, gawd, I love that thing. It shoots like a champ and the 2 stage trigger is rather crisp.

I have the AR15.COM Limited Edition RRA rifle, and it's a very nice gun! The fit & finish is first rate, and it's yet to have it's first stoppage! Did I mention it's damned accurate? :) I forgot to mention, I installed the RRA 2-stage trigger, and it's excellent for a 5 minute drop-in trigger job! I liked the trigger so much that I bought one for my Green Label Colt HBAR, and it dropped in just as nice. For anyone that is still shooting the stock AR trigger, I highly recommend the RRA 2-state trigger, or any similar upgrade. It makes all the difference in the world!

Try checking out http://ar15.com/

They have an "Industy Forums" section and Rock River Arms is one of the Manufacturers listed. All the comments that I have heard were very positive.

I believe that it would be a wise choice to buy a RR lower while the prices are still really good in comparison to other manufaturers. I plan on doing so myself after I recieve my BM lower from Gunsmoke. They also have some mock M4 uppers in stock, so I may try mating one of those with my BM lower.

Oh..and the $700 deal was a post ban RR weapon. . These have the CAR type telescoping stock, but it permanently made non collapsible in order to comply with ATF laws.

I guess what surprises me is to see folks proclaim the virtues of a chrome lined bore so much, yet everyone seems to be more than pleased with the RR Arms/AR15.com weapons even though they are not chrome lined. Go figure.

If I were taking my rifle into battle, I'd be more concerned about a chrome lined barrel. However, I've been shooting rifles for 40 years, and most of them didn't have chrome lining, I was just too stupid to miss it. Funny thing, they still seemed to shoot just fine. :)

Chrome-lining helps keep the bore from rusting -- a good virtue in a battlefield rifle in a place like Vietnam. But it also reduces accuracy. The rifles in my cool, dry safe don't need chrome-lined barrels.

As Absolom pointed out, it isn't a matter of chrome-lined or not chrome-lined being better than the other. It's a matter of better at what. Chrome-lined barrels last longer and are more resistant to rust. Unlined barrels are more accurate.

What's most important to you? If you are interested in NRA/CMP service rifle competition or varmint hunting, then utmost accuracy is more important than rust resistance. If you've got a damp basement, you're not very good at keeping your rifles dry and clean, etc., maybe chrome lining is more important to you than utmost accuracy.

In a SHTF scenario, I think you could argue a lot more about 7.62x39 (or 7.62x51) vs .223 than about chrome-lined vs. unlined.

Thanks guys. He also had a pre-ban flash suppressor on it so I hope its legal for his sake. The price he paid for it would have been great even without the pre-ban (apparently on a post ban gun) acc.

The Rock River arms AR-15 is a mighty fine rifle, I know many friends that have that same one. They love it, it never jams or stops up, you must keep it clean like any AR-15, but it will put holes in holes for ya. CLP is the lube of choice for this bad boy and use it wisely, and you will years of reliable service from it. I know my freinds take it to the range with them and they have a blast, i have shot it many times and it has a nice fit and finish not found on the lesser expensive AR-15's. It is a bargain and half and i would not pass one up if you found one for a great price, I have seen them on www.gunsamerica.com for around 500 to 600 and they are mighty appealing, I am seriously thinking about picking one up for my self and my family.

Hope that helps your quest .

Thank You,

Apologies if my questions are extending this thread beyond the intent of tlhelmer, but what I was curious about is whether a barrel of chrome-moly steel has some of the same rust resistance of a chrome lined barrel because of it's chrome content; and more so than a stainless steel barrel. I understand the importance of intended use; this is more out of curiosity than a determinant of what I may buy.

I do like what I see about RRA, but have yet to hold one.

barrels that are non chrome lined are typically more accurate because they break in faster and are slightly softer that chrome lined barrels, for the AR-15 it really doesnt matter if you get chromed or nonchromed, you are shooting non-corrosive ammo anyway, and you are not shooting the rifle full auto, so, civilian shooters like us donot need those features in our rifles, we clean them after shooting and even if you dont clean your rifles after cleaning they are not going to start rusting for a long, long time.

So dont let the chrome or non chrome influence your descision, The most accurate rifles out there are all non-chromed, they are all steel.

Hope this sets your troubled soul at rest
