Rock River A4?

I'm looking at picking up an M4 type rifle and there is a used Rock River A4 at the local gun shop. I am a pistol guy so I don't know too much about them. The owner said a homeland security agent dropped it off last week with a "few thousand" rounds through it. It's going for about $850.

I need a little help because I am not familiar with the brand/model/price. What are your guy's thoughts on
this?

I can get a RRA operator for 890 OTD, I would pass on it with a "few" thousand rounds through it. Keep your eyes open for better deals. You could build a nice rig for that price range, maybe start a new post for build advice.

I have not had a chance to play with their M4 model, but I do own a TASC that I purchased new in 2003. Many thousands of rounds later I am still very pleased with this rifle and it has never failed me. I would have no problem recommending a rock river product to you.

Again, depending on the optic on top, that may not be a great deal. I believe they will run in that price range brand new without optics, so check that out.

Lastly, watch out for the name dropping sales pitch. Whether or not the previous owner was a homeland security officer does not weigh into the value or reputation of the firearm. I only say this because I hear that a lot locally " a police officer just traded this last week" "a sled agent dropped this off yesterday" those may or not be true, but regardless, doesn't speak anything to the value or reliability of a weapon.

Bottom line, great rifle, not sure on the price point, but if you can negoitate a good purchase price it should suit you well even with a few thousand through it.

Depends a LOT on the quality of the optic. If it's an Aimpoint or EOTech*, it isn't a bad deal. Even a used one is worth $200-300, and that would put the rifle's value into the fair range. If it's anything but those two brands, skip it. As said, new RRAs can be had in the $900 range. If the rifle has indeed had a "few thousand" rounds through it, it may be getting close to time for a new bolt ($100 or so, generally I would have a spare on hand when I got to the 10K round mark).

Buy the gun, not the story. If it's in good condition and the optic is quality, the price is reasonable but not a steal. If the optic is even a midlevel one (Burris, Vortex), then it's NOT a good deal. I'd consider the value of the rifle to be $500-600 (depending on condition, I don't care if it was a fed agent or not who had it), and the optic would make up the rest of the value.

* Keep in mind that there's a bunch of cheap Chinese fakes of these brands out there, so be sure you know EXACTLY what you'd be buying before you hand over cash.
