Rock River 1911s How good??

Looking for input from those of you who have fired them or at least looked them over.

I have never fired one or seen one, yet they seem to get good reviews from those who have them.

How would they compare to a Kimber Custom or a Springfield Loaded? Are they head and shoulders above, or on par with?

Any info would be appreciated.

It is not really fair to compare a semi custom pistol costing twice as much like a RRA to a mere Springfield or a Kimber. The RRA is extremely accurate and very tight tolerances. Unless you shoot in competitions, the SA or Kimber or Colt should be plenty accurate. Last I checked there was quite a wait to get a new RRA.

Absolom, You shot a Rock Island Armory that sells for $275.. not a Rock River Arms. Rock River Arms are custom pistols built one at a time by hand not on an assembly line in some Nipa Hut in the Philippines. Although I've heard from some reliable sources that the Rock Island Armory frame and slides do make good base guns for customizing..

The Rock River Arms I've seen have been well built, accurate and well worth their asking prices with the high grade of workmanship that go into them. The wait for one is a bit staggering, but that's what you have to put up with for a hand fitted pistol.

Do not know yet...

Never seen one, but I own three AR15 made by RRA (an M4gery, a target gun and the last one...a National Match), could not be happier with their quality; so based on that I just sent my $200.00 deposit for the Elite Commando. Cost will be around $1500 with an estimated wait of 12 months. I hear they are very good.

carlosg,

Not to change the subject, but its obvious that you like the ARs. Did you compare them to the Bushmasters and Armalites? How do they compare?

I'm thinking of building a varmit/tactical rifle on a Rock River Arms lower. Haven't decided yet where I'll get the upper (thinking Metalcraft).

Did you order your RRA 1911 through a local dealer? I'm assuming you have to get a local to do the transfer?

Thanks.

There are two bullseye shooters at my club who have bought these guns, they are very nice very well made, very accurate .45s
the downside is that the wait is approaching a year for one.

Hey Master Blaster,

I had heard about the wait. I see it as a good thing for me. It'll give me some time to save up my pennies and talk my wife into letting me do it. I figure by the time it is done I'll have the money and the approval from my wife.

I'm also cosidering starting on my first AR project wich will put me in a pinch money-wise as it is.

:D

This is off the subject, but if you are thinking of putting together a varmit AR, you cannot do better than Compass Lake Engineering or Accuracy Speaks. They just about the best, especially CLE.

Shake: I ordered my uppers from http://www.greatprices.at/sableco.com (something wrong with their web site right now), and my lowers from http://www.gunsmoke-inc.com/catalog.htm, they were kits I put together. I think there is no difference between the BM and the RRA lowers, other than price (BM is $30 more). When I looked at a BM at my local dealer it had way too much play between the lower and upper; and It was over priced $900 plus tax for a 16" Plane Jane; for $975 I got a National Match RRA with a 2 stage trigger (I did the work myself). I would not hesitate to go with RRA again, their uppers are very well made, as their are a smaller company than BM, so they try harder and produce a better product for less (they need to gain a following). Look at their web site, they have a Varmint upper that could be just perfect for you.

Contact Donnie (the owner of Sable) at dprisp223@cs.com, he will give you dealer prices (lower than what you see at RRA web site).

So in short...go for the RRA lower, actually make the whole gun a RRA, you will not be disappointed, and yes I have a local FFL who will do the transfer for my 1911. Email me if more ??? carlosg@usisp.com

rock_jock ,

Hey I don't mind if we go off the subject (the mods might catch us).

What can you tell me abuot the two outfits you mentioned? Do they have web sites, contact info?

I am planning on ordering a Bushmaster DCM lower and putting a flat top heavy barrel on top. I'll buy the two (upper and lower) fully assembled.

I'm open to suggestions since this will be my first AR. I'm planning on it being my only lower receiver, but will probably get at least two complete uppers for it.

I'd appreciate any info you have. I've browsed a lot on AR15.com, but they seem to get a little tired of newbie questions over there, so I've just browsed previous posts.

Shake:
Keep in mind that the AR is *MODULAR*, you can start with something simple, and then add on as you wish or your wallet allowes for it. Do your research before you lay your money down, I did, and end up with RRA, many gunsmiths who specialize on AR start with an RRA combo (upper and lower) for a perfect fit, add a barrel of your choice, JP trigger, etc.

I think that going with a flat top is right, as you can add any sight of your choice, I got an A2 carry handle and a red dot for my target AR, I am shopping for a scope, my M4 has the tactical carry handle from RRA with a OKO red dot sight, just a Match made in heaven (or Hell).

This is the LEGP (limited edition group purchase) from AR15.com

Hey carlosg,

Thanks for the info. I've read very good things about those LEGP rifles and RRA rifles in general.

I've tried to go to the sableco.com website within the last week or two and it hasn't been up (someone at AR15.com recommended them as well). Don't know what is going on there.

I'm thinking it wouldn't hurt to give the RRA lowers a try if they are cheaper and just as good or better than BM.

Did you go the kit route on the whole gun? I was planning on getting a fully assembled lower, but if it isn't too hard, I'd consider a kit. I don't think I'd dare try the upper (headspacing the barrel and all).

Thanks again for the info. . .

That is right, his web site is down, I just email him about it, I also have some *shopping to do*, I got the uppers already put together, yes head spacing is an issue, not too hard, but requires know how to and tools, Both of my lowers were kits from Gunsmoke, you have to email him and be specific or you will end up getting Bushmaster parts, (I guess that Ed likes BM more than enything else); it is very simple to put them together, my first one took me over an hour, (I moved very slowly) the second did in about 30 minutes. If you feel like doing it, get the book: :Build your own AR by Duncan Long from Delta Press and also the U.S Marine Corps Technical Manual (TM 05538C-23&P/2. they both excellent sources of info and a must if you own an AR.

I should note that I do not have an upper from either. I do have an Accuracy Speaks single-stage trigger that I installed myself. I hae talked with lots of folks that have dealt with both companies, and bot are highly recommended. My next big purchase will probably be a flat-top 24" upper from CLE with a Krieger barrel. They run $1100 just for upper, but you could probably shoot the toenails off a moisquito at 100 yds if you wanted.
