I have run across a 32 caliber Beretta for $279. in like new condition. Worth it, any good as a back-up pocket pistol, what ammo to use?

Rock Island commander style .45 acp for $349. same questions as above.
Thanks.

I can tell you the Tomcat is a great gun..small well made, longevity is questionable. But, what the hey, it isnt a target gun.
Ammo is whatever it shoots well, is available and so on..The one I shot wasnt picky at all.

Rock Island 1911's are made by Armscor...same a Charles Daly. People seem to have taken to them better than the daly...basically a good gun. 4140 parts etc bla bla..I would buy one if I wanted a 45/1911. Havent shot one though...for what its worth....

I would get the 45

ammo for tomcat

As you may have read elsewhere on other threads
here, some users have magazine feed problems
(among others) with the Tomcat. For this reason,
I've moved to hardball/roundnose ammo for
carry. (Hey a hollowpoint .32 from a short barrel
isn't really going to mushroom much and may
actually mushroom in clothing). Also, I moved from
the factory magazine to one by ProMag and have
had much better luck.

The risk in buying a used Tomcat, methinks, is a
possibility of buying someone else's problem gun.

See also http://thearmedcitizen.com/beretta2.htm
which focuses on the Tomcat.

Best regards.

Well, I own a Beretta Tomcat and a P32, and I'd recommend the Kel Tec P32 over the Tomcat for your needs. It is much lighter, easy to shoot, holds as many rounds, etc. Of course, the Beretta feels more like a real gun, and the quality is what you'd expect from Beretta.

I also happen to have just picked up a Rock Island 1911 because I liked the basic Mil Spec look and the parkerized finish. I've only shot one box of ammo through mine, but no problems whatsoever and very good accuracy. I could reliably hit a soda can at about 25 yards. The fit and finish is excellent, so I'm very happy with the value.

My Tomcat runs fine with Silvertips. Avoid anything hotter, especially the very zippy Fiocci FMJ, as it will tear up this gun. Remember, it's a small, blowback-operated piece with an aluminum frame; it's designed for lightness and not longevity. ;)

(The P-32 is a fine little gun, but I just can't warm up to them. Also, the Tomcat is much easier for me to shoot accurately, and accuracy is important with these little popgun calibers.)
