Shortly before Christmas I had the cash to spare for a new gift for myself, and had no particular gun in mind. I had a few I had looked at that looked more promising than others. I decided to make a trip to the local Cabela's in Waco. I was eyeing a Colt 1911 Target in 9mm. It had a blue Tru Glo front, and adjustable Novak rear. The only problem for me is it was right handed only. I am a lefty, and hate the RH only safety. The trigger had a lot of creep in it for as expensive, and high grade as the gun was supposed to be. (Not what I would expect from a Colt. The .45 Auto Colts I tried were the same story.
Fast forward just to say I tried it it asked for the other one they had down there. (Did not know what brand it was at the time. It was an RIA in 9mm. A red Tru Glo front sight, and adjustable Novak rear sights. Ambi safety. A trigger that had no creep, or slack, and was not too heavy. The finish leaves a lot to be desired as it is parkerized. The fit of the parts was good though.
Skip a lot of long winded drivel. p) I bought it. It came with one magazine. A Mec Gar. It was under a heavy coat of packing grease. I stripped it down, and took the grips off, and went at it in a tub outside the house with a can of carb cleaner. Wiped it down, and gave it a good oiling. For the first time at the range I went to an indoor range. (It was pouring rain outside, and getting dark.) I for the sake of knowing I am not going to be taking the brass home with me used steel cased 115 grain FMJ Monarch ammo. The maximum range there is 15 yards. I started to test the gun out. From the first magazine I was having jams. Double feed after two or three shots like clock work.
The range owner was curios to see how the gun did, and loaned me a magazine from one of the range rentals (9mm Springfield I think an EMP) The change in magazines was the magic cure. 250 problem free rounds. The accuracy is more than I can milk it for. It shoots to point of aim. Groups were small for my averages. I ordered two more Metal Form Magazines from Midway. They arrived. I have further tested the gun with several types of ammo from JHP, to my 124 grain TC home cast hand loads. The gun drives tacks, and feeds anything I load in the magazine.
My experience with it so far has been good. I would advise a new buyer to save yourself the trouble, and just buy a quality magazine, and trash the Mec Gar.
Here is a picture. (I will try to post some target pics, and a few better pics once I can take it to the outdoor range.)
