So I recently have been looking at 1911 pistols and have seen a lot of Rock Island 1911's in the local shops. Does anyone have an opinion about these pistols? Are they worth buying or should I just put out the money for a Springfield or Kimber maybe a Para???

They r absolutely worth buying. I have a FS 9mm and its been just a great, great gun.

I am very happy with my Rock Island 1911. I've only had it a couple weeks but it has fired anything I put through it without issue. Even the cheap stuff like Tul-Ammo feeds without a problem. To me there is no noticeable mechanical difference between it and my friend's Springfield Mil-Spec, which is much more expensive, although I will say the Springfield has a better finish.

Yes, they're well worth it. I have 3 and one had a bad mag catch (others have been great, then problem one is great now). I called Ivan (ivan@armscor.com) and he paid shipping both ways and asked if there was anything else I wanted to which I replied, "A trigger job lowering it to 4lbs with very little overtravel would be nice." Well, when I got it back, the free trigger job was done to perfection. Tough to complain about that kind of service for a $419 gun!

Rock Island is the best bang for the buck. Mine feeds everything and now lives on home cast SWC's. You will want to ditch the grips and maybe the mag. Some people like the ACT mag but I don't. It works without problems but feels cheap and thin to me. The finish will probably look chalky until you oil it up then it will look pretty good.

They're decent, good for the price, but comparing them side by side to the more expensive 1911s (Springfield, Colt, Sig, S&W) will show you where the money goes.

I bought one for my father- to tell the truth, it hasn't impressed me. It's ok, but no more than that, and that's comparing it to Springfield, Sig, and S&W 1911s. I know this puts me in a minority (RIA folks can be very proud of their guns... I've had some try to tell me their $500 RIA is a better gun than any of those I've mentioned), but I'm going on what I've experienced.

IMO, if a buyer can come up with the extra money he/she will likely be happier with the more expensive gun. Springfield and S&W are also very well known for excellent customer service too (Sig is no slouch either).

If you stay on the budget end I'd probably also have a good look at the Remington R1- that one is at an in between price point.
