Robert Blake Murder Weapon

A number of newspapers have reported that the murder weapon in the Blake case is a WWII era, German-made, .38 calibre Walter PPK. The latest report, leaked by the police, is that this pistol has been traced back to Blake. If this report is true, Mr. Blake is in big trouble.

But as we know , the PPKs are autos and .38 is an American revolver calibre. According to a reference book I have, the PPK was in .22, .25, .32, and .380. Do you think this pistol is actually a .380 or is there some other explanation for these reports? I think some people thought the murder weapon was a P-38, which was a 9 MM made by Walter and some other companies c. WWII. Is this the source of the confusion? Do reporters think Walter P-38 means .38 calibre?

i'm sure that it was a .380, and in the infinite wisdom of reporting, that was truncated to .38 <afterall we all know that you don't need to add the last charactor if it's a zero>

just be glad they didn't try to attach some buzz word/phrase, like cop-killing .357 snubnose saturday night special with a high capacity pre-ban fully-loaded clip of Black Rhino cop-killer armor piercing cyanide-tipped and kevlar-coated death dealing bullets released by a hair-trigger so lightly tuned it goes off before a finger even touches it. yes the minute air disturbances caused by the moving finger actually set it off or maybe not even that, the gun is possessed by evil spirits (malevolent spirits created by the evil gun companies profits soaked in children's blood), the gun wants to kill.

Sorry for misspelling WALTHER. Believe me, I know better.

I agree that the pistol is most likely a .380 PPK. We will see!

News reports that I heard said that the serial number had been filed off. But the ATF can raise serial numbers that have been filed off. They supposedly did so in this case and traced the gun back to Blake. He's also been charged with 2 counts of soliciting murder. If he's guilty, he deserves what he gets...

If the serial number is just filed off..they can acid etch the metal and get a good #. Forensics has some neat stuff to play with.

RE: Serial Number

I'm confused. I thought serial numbers were a byproduct of one of the crime prevention acts in the 1960s. Am I off on my dates?

The gun is supposed to be a pre WWII Walther. Is it possible the gun never had serial number and the reporter just threw that in with all the other misinformation?

Serial number was at least partially removed, but apparently the authorities were able to uncover it because metal below the numbers is compressed when they are stamped on.

New story describes the gun as 9 MM. This seems to indicate that it was a P-38 made by Walther. I don't believe the PPK was made in 9 MM during WWII.

WaltherP99man, guns in the 1800's have serial numbers. If nothing else, it helps manufacturers keep track of production runs. The Nazi's were also noted for being anal about record keeping.
If you have an old S&W or Colt, you can tell them your serial number and they will tell you the year made and some other information.

Thanks for the correction Croyance. Don't know where I got the idea from but it was in there nonetheless.

Drakejake, I just saw the same thing on CBS with Dan Blather, he was calling it a 9MM too.

Walther caliber markings

My German manufactured Walther PPK's are marked "9mm Kurz" or "9 mm K". Calling it a "9mm" is correct, just not calling it "9 mm Luger" or Parabellum.
Italian .380's for European use are marked 9mm Corto.
