ROA -- etched S/N on cylinder

I have a 7.5" Ruger Old Army and just acquired a 5.5" model. I just noticed that on the 5.5" model the last three digits of the S/N are etched onto the rear of the cylinder face. My 7.5" doesn't have this. Is this something Ruger did at one point, or was it a previous owner?

Though I wonder why Ruger would do some and not others?

All Ruger cylinders leave the factory with the #'s electro penciled on the cylinder. Some are so lightly done that they may not be visible after a few cleaning. Bright light and magnification should help. This has been discussed several times at the two Ruger forums.
