RIVER DUCKS!!

Anybody do any duck huntin on a river?? Really just gettin into ducks this year and its a blast. we shoot some everytime we go but I have a few questions about how I can put more ducks in the bucket.

Here is our set up. Its on a river about 10-15 yards across with alot of trees. We made a ground blind on a ridge over looking the river. we know there down there, cause everytime we go in there they fly off. There is alot of trees cause were pretty much in the flatwoods withc makes it kinda thick. Plenty of shot opurtunities but you gotta pick your shots.

First is calling. Ive herd that there is no purpose in calling on a river but, I have a few calls and have used them over christmas break and actually seen ducks turn when I hit the call and com in. So, how should I call on the river, like when to start in the mornin and afternoon. Or, any other advise on calling ducks.

Second is yeast??? I was told to put a couple packets of yeast in a dead spot close to where your hunting and it will bring them in. Has anyone else herd of this befor. and is it legal??

Anyother advice is welcome also. THANKS!!

Woodies will light on about anything making noise around first light. Usually that flight last a short period of time and its over, hell we can set a watch by that flight. We pick at the others through the morning but like you I'm relatively new to it (4 years now).

A little of what I can impart, no skybusting, no highballing, learn what types look like in flight, go with someone knowledgeable, and other good common sense things like that. Duck hunting is an art that some of these fellows take seriously and can teach to you a lot if you are respectful and listen but **** them off and you'll get an earful and no help for reference.

NEVER put anything out that can be construed as bait or non-naturally occurring fodder, Game Warden and Federal Officers take waterfowl very seriously. LEAVE YOUR CALL at home or around your neck until you have gotten a decent realistic level of calling, it doesn't work just honking on the thing. Get someone to teach you and give you pointers.

Ive done some research on calling to them and practice all the time. Got a buddy that grew up in it so he is pretty smart with it. I was never planing on baiting them up. The guy I talked to that told me bout the yeast said it wasnt ilegal but, hes not a person id put trust in, thats why im asking here. I am a very ethical hunter no matter what it is im trying to bag. So I take it the yeast is ilegal.

And the ones we have been shootin have mostly been woodies. Shot one shovler, and a few tills also.

No on the yeast. On the river or woods, use a lower volume call and fewer decoys with a larger spacing. I would get as close to the water as possible and avoid an overlooking blind. If you can stand in the water next to the trees, great.

Your not going to really have time to call on a smaller river like that. Watch both ways and blast em when they're close. Your going to see mostly pass shooting i would think and maybe some landing if they want into that spot. Good news is that they're close. Bad news is that they're going to be fast Lol.
