It's a sad day. :(
Cabela's founder: Richard Dick Cabela past away. He was 77. Mr Cabela started the retail business in 1961. He sold fishing flies in mail order ads.
Cabela's did about $3.6 billion in sales in 2013. :D

Died of laughter, did he? Quite a legacy to leave behind, surely not one he expected starting out :p. I look forward to buying a gun at the 'nearby' one all the way across town, since I believe they will have the muscle to obtain a Remington R51 in the next few months (as opposed to the local mom n pop who aren't even trying to order this year)

when i worked at Cabela's years ago Dick showed up at the store to wish everybody a Merry Christmas and he was wearing a very well made tux in camo.

a friend of mine helped setup the gun department in Kearney. when they were ordering guns Jim Cabela asked my friend if you were sure we needed that many guns and Dick said are you sure that is going to be enough guns.

if you were ever in the Cabela's store in downtown Sidney you know why the Kearney store was the first big store. now the Kearney store is by far the smallest store.

Cabela's T shirt...

I had a brown Cabela's T shirt I wore often from 2006-2011. :D
I never went to any of the big retail stores but I've ordered many items; clothes, gloves, firearm stuff, etc from www.Cabelas.com since the 1980s.

An exgirlfriend once complained after ordering me shorts for my birthday that she still regulary recieved the Cabelas catalogue.

I of course saw no problem there.

Most of my first reloading operation was purchased from Cabelas.

Also, they routinely have cases of XM-193, which is my favorite 5.56mm load.

I-80 in Boomtown is a must stop

I always stop off before I get to Reno and on my way home from Reno. Love the store and appreciate the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff

I remember ordering a Cabela's catalog from the back of Field and Stream in the mid-sixties. It was more like a small pamphlet than a catalog. As soon as I got it, I ordered my second bow(Shakespere Super Necedah Recurve "Wonderbow"...I still have it) and two dozen cedar shaft arrows. You could order your own cresting. One dozen field points and a dozen Fred Bear Razorheads(they were "new and hi-tech"). 3 months later I shot my first buck with a bow. I've gotten Cabela's catalogs every year since. I still look forward to them.

I wonder if Bass pro , Scheel's and the others would have ever got started if cabela's hadn't opened the door. those companies should send flowers to the funeral

I shopped at the original store in Sidney several times before Cabela's built their first "big" store. The Sidney store faced south and the east/west railroad tracks were right behind the store. If I remember correctly, the store was a two story red brick building with both levels visible from the front door. Yup, I'm old. ;)

LL Bean expanded their hunting store, increased inventory, and lowered prices right after Cabela's moved into Maine. That's been very good for me, and I do enjoy browsing at Cabela's, even got a good deal on a double stacked 10/22 factory mag recently. R.I.P. indeed.
