Rings & Bases

Hey guys,
So I ordered up myself a Savage 12 LRP and I also chose a VORTEX Viper 6.5-20x50 PA to go with it. Now I am looking for some hardware in between! I think I want to go with a picatinny style 1 peace rail and to my understanding a 20 moa cant (as in the angle) shouldn't be a problem to zero at 100 yards. With that being said, I am looking for a nice solid rail but I am on a budget.

Any real difference between these two? Aluminum vs. Steel?

Also the 12 LRP is a target action, will these fit? Someone had said the recoil lug does not line up.

Secondly, going to need rings with that, the scope has a 30mm tube and a 50mm objective lens, I have no idea what height rings to get, obviously I will want it to be as low as possible, is there any good way figure that out short of ordering them and seeing if they fit?

Of the two scope mounts you chose, one has a 20 MOA cant for long range shooting. The other is 0 MOA (no cant), which means you have to rely on the vertical adjustment in the scope for long range shots.

Either mount should serve you well. But given the choice, I would go with the 20 MOA mount.

A third option is EGW. I have them on 3 of my 5 Savages.
EGW 20 MOA for Savage 12 round receiver

An easy way to measure for scope rings is to install the scope mount and place a couple stacks of pennies for the scope to rest upon. You can add or subtract pennies until you get the scope-to-barrel clearance you desire. Then measure the height of the stack of pennies. Most ring manufacturers will list the ring height (distance from the top of the mount rail to the bottom of the scope tube).

I like Leupold QRW rings because they are easy to lap and allow the scope to be easily removed and installed without loss of zero.

Yeah, I ended up ordering the 20 moa weaver. I think it will do a good job, and if it doesn't an upgrade isn't that much. Going to wait on the scope to get here so i can get the lowest rings.

have you put the base on? How do you like it if you have it installed yet?

I am looking to get a 20 MOA base but do not want to spend a ton on it

Yes, I decided on a Evolution Gun Works Steel HD Savage Short Action Round Back Picatinny Rail Scope Mount - 20 MOA 86202 $102.99

So far it has worked great. I did have to bed it when i first got it (not sure if it was the base or the action that was a little off) It is real solid, nicely made. I can still get a 100 yard zero with the 20 MOA but my scope has lots of adjustment (30mm tube)
